don't remember the name or the manufacturer, but someone in the late 50s, early 60s used to make treacle taffy. Then in the 70s, I could get Callard and Bowser's version--it's an almost hard molasses taffy. When C&B stopped making it, I couldn't find it anywhere anymore.
Finally came up with my own recipe...
Mary Janes are close, but they've got peanut butter inside and they're a softer taffy--these were hard, you sucked on them awhile and they softened into taffy. mmmm. Nothing like a good molasses taffy.
My other childhood favorites are Brach's butterscotch hard candies, and chocolate stars. And sponge candy--spun molasses dipped in chocolate.
And there's always malted milk balls.
Makes me glad I limit sugar...
