Candy from your "good old days"

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Gaelen » Tue Jul 29, 2008 9:13 am

don't remember the name or the manufacturer, but someone in the late 50s, early 60s used to make treacle taffy. Then in the 70s, I could get Callard and Bowser's version--it's an almost hard molasses taffy. When C&B stopped making it, I couldn't find it anywhere anymore.

Finally came up with my own recipe...

Mary Janes are close, but they've got peanut butter inside and they're a softer taffy--these were hard, you sucked on them awhile and they softened into taffy. mmmm. Nothing like a good molasses taffy.

My other childhood favorites are Brach's butterscotch hard candies, and chocolate stars. And sponge candy--spun molasses dipped in chocolate.

And there's always malted milk balls.

Makes me glad I limit sugar...

Hi guys, Can't remember the brand name but there was a hard, bitter licorice (1950's/60's) that came in a Tootsie Roll shape about 5 in. long and 3/4 in. diameter. I think it was a two-letter name. Came in an orange card-stock box. Does that ring a bell with anybody? Can't say it was the best tasting candy but it lasted forever--NO, not like an all-day sucker, I mean FOREVER, like weeks! I'd love to find some to torture my twelve-year-old with.

Best,
Tom
