Wiring Harness Disconnect Between Hatch & Bulkhead?...

Postby Dean in Eureka, CA » Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:15 pm

I know several of you have done this and I like the idea too, would make removing the hatch a cinch, however...
After some digging around today at the places that were open I didn't find any suitable male/female connectors...
Whadya all use?
I can get by with a four wire connector, but would like to find an eight wire connector, so I can put speakers in the hatch.
I would prefer something round, vs. flat, like a flat 4... Smaller the better.

Amphenol plugs. They come in all configurations. You have to solder the pins yourself though...NO pigtails!!

This is what I used:

What about using 2, 4wire flat plugs?

I used a 4 wire Round, got it at schrunks or however you spell it, don't know the brand, that is for the trailer running lights, there there is a two wire flat for the 12 volt trailer lights

Good like, John

Batt's Racing has automotive connecters. Very good quality and priced well.

I got mine at HD or Lowes (can't remember which). Don't have any pics off hand, but they are just single wire, round male and female matching plugs. They are insulated and I then just put some wire wrap over to make it look better.

There's a zillion options for you -- look at autoparts houses, etc.

I generally use mini-molex connectors (available at radio shack) for this sort of application. Reasonably small, easy to assemble, and has a pretty good current rating.

digikey.com has tens of thousands of connectors to brows through.

http://order.waytekwire.com/CGI-BIN/LAN ... 31+M37+ENG has thousands

You _could_ use a trailer connector but they're pretty big. I'd use a smaller molex or amp-style connector.

8) I used a normal trailer wire conector.

This is all I did. Then I covered it with a small 1/8 ply. sheet w/ 4 small brass screws. cover is 5x13. I'm glad I put this in I have had to remove hatch once so far.
Click on the link below and in the bottom right corner of the hatch you'll see the small ply. cover.

Walmart I believe, during the build gathered all sorts of stuff but I think that is where I got it, or was it Tractor Supply Company?

How often do you plan on removing the hatch? I plan on just using a terminal strip for ring connectors. If I have to remove the hatch, just unscrew 4 or 6 screws, and never have to worry about it coming loose. Something like this:

The Anderson Powerpole connectors work well. Easy to connect and disconnect. The wires can be soldered or crimped to the connectors. I like to solder them so they do not rattle or work loose. They make clean looking connections.
