Generic Benroy Seals

I have been looking at several plans while trying to decide which TD to build. Have pretty much decided on the generic Benroy. After reviewing the plans, I didn't see any detail on the type and application of seals around the doors and hatch. Can someone point me in the right direction, hopefully with some pix or illustrations? Leaky campers drive me nuts.

If you look here You will find lots of information. I used Lil bear's hatch seal and on the door I used a thinner seal I found at Lowes.

Here's a picture I took of the weatherstripping on the Generic ET hatch.

It's the nicest weatherstripping I've seen so far.

And with all the grooves interlocking with all the other grooves, it makes it harder for water to get in.

How does that compare in effectiveness to Steve F's labyrinth of wood layers? And do you think your answer would be different when the trailer is 10 years old vs new?

I realize there are some differences in "intent"...just wondering about the effectiveness.

Originally I had trouble getting the hatch to seal, both at the top and at the bottom. I eventually fixed that by using two seals at the top, and wrapping the lower seal onto the floor.

I think the question you are really asking though, is, "Does the wooden web inboard of the seal add any sealing capacity?".

I guess, if you didn't have a good seal, it would add a layer of protection. But that extra layer of wood sure weighs a lot.

I guess it depends on what you feel comfortable with, both initially, and 10 years from now. Would I buy on of Steve's teardrops again? Yes, Absolutely! But I would also use the same weatherstripping that I used on the Generic ET.

Sealing is the primary issue of my question. One of the things I like about Steve's seal system is the fact that it gives a "trim" edge without using aluminum angle. As you say, though, there's a lot of extra lumber in there, which I'm not real fond of. I'm really trying to figure out something of a happy medium.

My build is basically combining your Gen Ben profile and layout with Steve's construction manual methods...this discussion has triggered the seed of an idea, but I think I'm going to have to sleep on it and look at it while I work on my trailer tomorrow to actually formulate the thoughts. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll be able to present it intelligently for the group to pick apart.
