Thanks Doug and Finn...Ya know...these two lanterns are going to be workers and put in use...and I have the ratty old boxes and literature. They even have the price stickers...one was $13.98 and the other $13.56 back in the 70"s. If any of the collectors out there would like the boxes, I would be happy to mail them for postage costs. They are not exactly pristine... First PM gets them...Dave

And the after.... Paint isn't a dead on match however it wasn't originally, still needs a new pump, the original is really pitted and rusted and not very pretty, waiting on that. Not bad for a 55 year old lantern. Doug

Wow doug, the tank looks brand new. What paint did you use?

Someone had hand painted the frame in silver many years ago and now it looks good. The spray paint is just a small hobby can and the frame really doesn't get that hot to scorch the paint. I polished the nickle fount with a buffing wheel on my lathe along with the brass gas cap. There's still some pits but for 59 years it looks great. It sputtered quite a lot when I tried to light it but eventually it stopped and now it burns nice. I've had a propane Coleman lantern for years now, but there is something to a nice shiny bitchin looking fount vs a green propane tank with the label and all. Kinda brings back some of the fun in camping, like pumping up the tank when the light dims. I will never go back to a white gas stove though, too dangerous from my experiences. The Camp Chef stove/oven suits me just fine. It's been fun cleaning up this old lantern and it will complement the teardrop very well. I may make it a box sometime. Thanks to this thread, I've had fun. Thanks :D Danny

Looks great Danny. That will be a nice addition to your trailer. I really prefer the nickle tank lantern over the painted ones. You going to build a box for it?

Lanterns

Postby CAJUN LADY » Thu Dec 04, 2008 12:20 pm

I've got 2 old red "Sunshine of the Night" single burner ones. One is a 1952 with no glass base and the other one is pretty rusty and I'm not sure of the age. I will take a picture of them and hopefully get some suggestions from you pros on how to clean them up. I also have a green 1975 single burner stove. It needs cleaning up too. Not even sure if they work anymore but once they are cleaned up, I'll try and crank em' up.

I was told to replace the caps that have the "screw" heads on them where the gas goes. Is that a safety issue?

Ya'll sure have some nice looking ones. I have a drimmel with all the bells and whistles so I will try and get the rust off with that....gently.

Pics tomorrow.

Jeremy, thanks. I'll get around to making a box for it especially since that ventilator makes it top heavy for traveling. Took it over to show my son and it tipped over more than once. :) Danny

Yes, if the cap has a hole in the side. It appears the mya have made some that have the screw but no side hole. The hole in the side will spray gas out if you loosen it under pressure. If the lantern is still hot and depending on the location of the hole, it could cause a flare-up.

Jeremy, yes, it does have a hole so it will get replaced. Thanks.

On another note...after 31 years of marriage I am considering divorcing my dear husband. You see, I have been a camper, hunter, outdoors-person all my life. When I met the hubby, he wasn't, but he did camp with me and the kids. When we married, my dad gave us a Coleman 3 burner stove and a Coleman lantern. We used them everytime we camped when the kids were younger. I have since had new stoves along the way. Since I have been reading these posts and looking at all the cool lanterns and stoves, I realized I haven't seen my old 3 burner in awhile. Here is where the divorce came to mind -- I emailed my husband (no longer referred to as 'dear') and asked if he's seen "my" stove and "my" lantern. Reply: "Oh, I threw those out about a year ago cause they didn't work anymore". I haven't answered him back because I am not sure which words I want to use to describe how really, really, really pi$$ed off I am. :x Thank you for letting me vent.

Heikki You can gather up all those "other" brands and send them to me! I like em all.
P.S. I have a 1956 228e. Looks just like Danny's except it has a painted font instead of the nickel plated one.
