Hammer & tongs

I just tried a product made by De-Solv-It. It's called: Contractors' Solvent. It is designed for hard surfaces including cured paint, metal and wood. It is guranteed to remove: latex adhesin, oil, tar, grease, glue, foam, caulk, silicone, wet paint, and many other things.

I used it to remove the excess cualk around my trim and well as some other unknown black stuff on my aluminum. I sprayed it on a rag and wiped the stains away. I followed it up with alittle soap and water and a dry towel to remove any remaining solvent.

It worked great!

I bought the product at ACE Hardware.

You may want to try WD-40. It's actually a much better solvent than lubricant or rust penetrator. I'd test it on some scrap aluminum, though

Thanks guys;
I have some WD-40 on hand and will try it...if it doesn't do the trick, I can see a trip to ACE in my near future.

You might try an auto paint supplier. They sell several kinds of cleaner/degreasers for prepping before painting. I used some a couple of years ago and it worked great, don't remember the brand. I used some laquer thinner on some tape residue the other day, came right off.

Mineral spirits (paint thinner) is worth a try. Works great on anything oil-based and softens tape residue too. $1.99 from Walmart. Can't beat it for lotsa general stuff.

There is a product called "Goof Off". Our builder gave us some to remove the stickers off the toilets. Worked good. You can see it here
