Hatch spring

Has anyone tried this type of hatch spring?

Seems that this type might prevent the preload associated with a gas-spring, (hard on the hinge) but with the downside of no lift assist.
I use a modified "broomstick" method currently, but want to prevent the ghastly "wind-blast-ruins-hatch" syndrom.
Anyone?

I have used this type of spring holder on sailboat hatches; the only problem is sudden drops
:BE when you accidentally hit one when moving around than the hatch drop very quickly. If you use two dropping the hatch would be much harder.

Dan, I just sent you a PM, but you can ignore it:

What kind of black trim are you using there, and where did you get it?

Ira, The trim is painted Aluminum. I would have gone for anodized or powder coating but paints cheap! :)

First a wipedown with vinegar. then a primer coat and the gloss black. I have a local aluminum supply co that sells this stuff in 16 ft lengths for about $5 to $10 each. Sorry they don't ship at that price. But they are open on Saturday.
