computer problems

Postby kartvines » Sun Jan 18, 2009 6:41 pm

I just change computers and am having problems getting connected to sites that was once no problem. I am using the same provider, so nothing has changed there, I think that a setting needs to be changed or something like that. It drives me up the wall because I just am unable to figure it out myself, I took my old computer to be repaired and got really burned because the guy messed it up more, so I had to get this one working and on line, anyway does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be and what I can do to correct it. sites like my bank, paypal and other sites where money may be involved it seems to be locked out it goes to the horrible page telling me I cant be connected to that page, I have done everything that page advised me to do to correct the problems to no avail. I know there are much sharper people out there whom may have some ideas.

Check the encryption on your browser. If its less than 128 bit ? you won't be able to connect to these sites..........

Try downloading a different browser... like Firefox for example. You might find that all your problems go away. ;)

I have already checked that according to my browser my ciper strength is 128 bits, and I would like to be able to use firefox I downloaded it but it refuses to allow me to open the browser, so that is another problem.

Check your SSL setttings in the Internet options-advanced tab. SSL2,SSL3 and TSL1 should all be checked......

I have already done the SSL setting, and all are checked, and as far as I firewall I shut if off thinking it was a problem, and that did not correct the problem.

Another problem I discovered is I have tried to load many different browsers to see if it worked for me better, each browser loaded but it woould not load the start page, acting as if I was not on line. Only Internet Explorer will work for me.

Ok. Is it every site you visit or just some? What error message are you receiving? Are you getting javascript errors? Runtime errors?

More details might help.

more infromation

Postby kartvines » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:02 pm

I have lower my security settings and check to see if the site worked and we still got nothing, as far as sites I don’t get, well most sites do come up, so far not every site fails, in fact more work than don’t. It seems as it is always questionable. My wife just tried going to block buster website and again she was not able too, most of the time the error page is the same.

Most of the time we get this page, and I have done everything that it has suggested.

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please try the following:
• Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
• If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
• To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
• See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
3. Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
• Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
• If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
• Click the Back button to try another link.

Check the settings of your computer against the laptop. If they all seem to be the same.. well,,, I dunno.
What I do at this point is reinstall XP... which is a real pain, because I have to reinstall all other programs I use.... Like Word, Excell.......etc..

But , I find that usually corrects my problem......

Thanks for all the feed back I will work on it for a couple days and maybe it will work, I was told that maybe by installing windows 7 may correct my problems, if not maybe by formatting the entire drive and reinstalling XP will be my next more, at least I can still get to those site on my work laptop for time being. My laptop s running Vista so I am unsure if the setting are the same anyway and if so what setting am I comparing and matching?
