Clamps

I know this isn't a good start, but I don't think I own any clamps... I have our Grandad's workbench with a vice, but no clamps.

Was wondering what clamps you guys use and more importantly why, and what for?

I don't really want to ask at the DIY shop because I just know that half the stuff they recommend will sit unused in a tool box for the next 2 years until we build a chicken coop or something

I used mainly bar clamps amd pipe clamps.Pretty much any type would work depending on what your clamping. Just keep in mind, if you think you have enough clamps, go get more. You will need them!
I bought alot from Harbor Frieght when on sale. The motto is "You can never have too many clamps"

Bar clamps are essential. Spring clamps are also handy, especially for lofting curves.

I think our equivelant of a bar clamp is called a sash clamp over here... what sort of widths would you recommend? Found a 48 inch for £8.80 (about $12)... does that sound cheap, expensive or about right?

It really depends on how you build your floor and walls. If you keep it simple and don't insulate your walls, you can get by with a few bar clamps or pipe clamps.

I think a mantra on this forum is that you can never have too many clamps. Bar clamps are good but so are cheap spring clamps. I have accumulated many clamps during my build.

The spring clamps come under the same name and I think we call bar clamps as sash clamps... but pipe clamps?

This is a pipe clamp - it gets its name due to the "pipe" used in its construction - the advantage of this type of clamps is that the pipe can be any length that the owner chooses

Now that is one clean lookin shop Yes for certain clamps and more clamps. The more the better. You just cant have enough.

Ive got dozens of small size clamps and 4 very long ones that are 2m meters across each. As well as 1 meter in length. I think I still dont have enough

Have to agree with you on that one. I also have the bar clamps as well as real cheapy spring clamps here.

That's your typical pipe clamp (great picture). You buy the ends and then you buy the pipe separate. You can buy different lengths of pipe and just switch out the clamp ends as needed.

I used bar clamps also. They are handy but are limited in length (usually 36-48").

Reminded me that besides clamps my kayak straps and extra lumber helped too.

This was my test on how the birch would bend over my 24" front radius.


Then the final setup when I glued it into place with clamps and straps.

Ditto. Spring clamps, bar clamps and pipe clamps. If you think you already have enough, you're wrong.
