Low profile tires and wide wheels

Postby 50s_Outboards » Wed Apr 01, 2009 5:28 pm

Hi all,
I have four almost new aluminum wheels with tires from an import car that I no longer own. I was thinking about using two of them on my future Grumman 2 build.
The wheel is 16x7 with a -40mm offset. I've confirmed that the four bolt pattern works on a trailer hub. The tire is 205/45R16, about eight inches wide mounted.
My concern is with frame clearance and excessive rolling resistance. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Courtland

I should have read Steve's post first, it is a positive 40mm offset.
Thanks, Courtland

I went through the same issues with my teardrop build. Wide automotive wheels with an offset. It is nice to have about an inch and a half clearance between the frame and wheel, some have more some have less. This is just one of the many things you will worry about during the build process. Lots of choices to be made like building out over the frame since the Grumman 2 has internal wheel wells. It looks like a good build for a custom frame and torsion axle. With the light weight the rolling resistance isn't as much an issue as hydroplaning in the puddles.

I had one spiffy Ford Ranger wheel, and was prepared to buy a mate. BUT The offest nixed that.

Holy cow, Rose is a teenager now! Done? Surely you jest. A teardrop is never "done".

A set of 1, 1.5 or 2 inch spacers from eBay would make those Ranger wheels fit just fine . . .

With 40 mm import FWD wheels you'll likely need some spacers for sure. I have a set of 1.5 inch ones on my Harbor Freight trailer which is sporting alloy wheels
