A Solution To My Problem (Teardrop Build with Pictures)

Postby S.Anderson » Mon Apr 13, 2009 7:19 pm

I've been lurking here for a while. Studying your techniques, ideas, and travels.

You see, my wife and I love to camp. We have been doing it for years. First in a tent and then graduating up to a very nice popup camper. We love the popup and used it all time until recently. My wife works for a bank and recently they decided that all employees would have to work every Saturday. :x No more long weekends. The popup became too much to drag out and set up for a Saturday afternoon overnight trip. So, as any red blooded American would do, rather than accepting that camping was over, I created a solution. :D I think you all know where this is going.

I've been wanting to build one of these since I was a teenager. So when I was offered this wonderful trailer for free, I happily took it.

My wife wasn't happy this "thing" was in the yard. But it was the beginning of something I've had in my head for a long time.

The build begins:

Look at the drawing on the board and you will see what I had in mind.

I couldn't decide on how to do the outside, so naturally I picked the hardest thing I could come up with:
Image

Cutting aluminum with a jigsaw isn't the best way to do it.

Then I discovered a wonderful thing called a "Nibbler"

The doors were a challange.

Some of the inside.

Its very close to being finished now and I took it camping this past weekend.

It was awesome and I couldn't believe all the attention it created.

It was very satisifying to build and everyone I meet loves it. It's nice to create something where you decide every little curve, color, and detail. I just love to sit and look at it. But one of the best things is watching people smile as they look at it. It has a strange way of making people happy.

I really have to thank Grant Whipp for answering all of the questions I asked and all of the parts I bought from him.

She is very happy with it. I saw it just the way it turned out even when it was just a rusty old trailer. She just didn't have the "vision" that I had.

Thanks for the compliments. I knew this crowd would like it.

Nice documentation of your very talented efforts.

1st thing I noticed was how far forward the axle and doors looked. We have a lot of noobs that desire to build on a stock trailer frame without moving the axle back, What advise would you give them? What's the tongue weight with the galley loaded? If you had it to do over again, what would you do differently? Again, nice job!
