Howdy from Texas

Postby rvsixer » Mon Apr 27, 2009 10:15 am

Well, I thought I should introduce myself after finding this great site last week. I've barely left my computer since to eat or sleep since, perusing over the vast amount of information here :coffee: ! I have participated on many boards, this one is by far the most civil and helpful one I have come across.

I am a former medium-sized TT owner, sold that and then tried a truck camper. Both too much hassle imo, so I started looking for alternatives and I think a teardrop or pop-up TTT may be the ticket. What I am looking for:
1) Full size queen to sleep two (60"x80" size, I am about 6'5")
2) Space for doggy bed (~36"x40")
3) Porta-potti (interior location for mostly nighttime use, not outside)
4) Air conditioner
5) Sitting area of some sort (must have someplace to play Yahtzee if the weather turns bad)
6) The teardrops have definitely caught my eye, but I am unsure if I can do without standing room.
7) My tow vehicle "shadow" is 80" wide and 76" tall, would like the trailer size to stay in it as much as possible (whatever happened to the days of diesel being cheaper than gas?).

I've homed in on the Lil Diner (for the seating area, but where to put the potti and dog bed?), the Optimized Winter Warrior, and the Compact III. Thanks to Mike and Andrew for these excellent designs.

Leaning towards the OWW ( http://www.mikenchell.com/images/10ftoww_e.jpg ), but I can't seem to find VRML/DXF/dimensioned drawings for it here anywhere? Let me know what other designs I may be missing, hope to join the building crowd soon!

Thanks, Rob.

Welcome to the forum Rob. Currently I'm building an OWW based on Mike's drawings. As of this date no has built an OWW - others have built the Winter Warrior. I have some "loose" dimensions on the LBWW on the link below. I am almost finished with the lower section

Starleen2,

I have been following your thread, very impressive looks like a nice build. I did find the files for the "standard" Winter Warrior on the main page, but wondering how the "optimized" version differs (except for the more rounded design of course).

Image to the playground Rob. I usually point people to my build but it won't work for someone tall. Have you seen Mike S's latest build? Remember that you can always change any features you don't like.

Enjoy the forums and ask if you need anything.

Hey there. rv6r. Any experience you gained while building/owning an RV6 should definitely help you with a teardrop build. I helped build an RV3 a few years back and found that aluminum is a wonderful material to work with! From what you are specifying, a teardrop should fit the bill very well for. Keep in mind that you can keep the porta-potty outside and have a tent-like enclosure around the door area. There are many examples on this forum.

I hope you find a camper that will work for you!

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. Wow there are a lot of RV builders out there (both the flying and ground bound kinds)!
New design point: My HOA is on my case about my truck camper being parked out front on the truck (they seem to think its a vehicle and subject to their "unsightly vehicle" clause, even though the Texas DOT says it is not a vehicle :noyes: ). So, my teardrop/popup build is definitely going to have to be 72" or less in height, so I can store it below our fenceline and the HOA can't touch it :laughing1: .

I have looked at the ET, and recently found Rik Keller's Road Toad which looks like it could be made to work. Have seen the porta-potti tents, but indoor is still a requirement (one less thing to setup/teardown at camp, and I like to have instant pitstop availability while on the road). I'd love to come by and see your cub and tear spinnernut, next time I am up that way.

Thanks. Might be so many here because we are all getting laid off may as well build a camper :) .

I found a place in Burnet that rents Litte Guy trailers, going to take one out for a couple of nights to answer the "do I build a tear or TTT" question.
