Langostino Lobster

Postby chorizon » Sat May 02, 2009 12:36 pm

Just saw another commercial from a national restaurant chain advertising "langostino lobster". I always kinda thought this must be some sort of "spin" perpetrated by advertising types. Kinda like calling "dolphin" (not Flipper, but dolphin-fish) "mahi-mahi". Turns out there has been a debate concerning just this thing for a few years now.

I'm all about truth in advertising, just thought I'd let some folks know.

Langostino Lobster

Postby Alfred » Sat May 02, 2009 4:04 pm

I used to work for Red Lobster back in the 1980's, way back when they were still owned by General Mills. We had several dishes that included Langostino Lobster. They are not larger than a shrimp, and obvious to the naked eye that they are not lobster, in the sense that Maine Lobster is lobster. That being said, they are very tasty, similar in texture and flavor to lobster. I always liked 'em. Of course, just about anything tastes good broiled in garlic butter!

By the way, just for the record, my experience working in the Red Lobster kitchen was that they were extraordinarily clean. I would recommend them to anyone as far as cleanliness.

Yeah I get it...escargot is quite tasty too, broiled in garlic butter, but I wouldn't pick 'em up out of my yard though...

Dolphin, Mahi-Mahi, and Dorado are all the same fish. The different names are the name given to the fish in different regions of the world. You could say Mahi-Mahi is Hawaiian for "Dolphin Fish" or Dorado is Spanish for "Dolphin Fish"

Those Maine-iacs are just trying to protect their brand. I prefer spiny
(Florida) lobsters over Maine lobsters. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before they will try to say that spiny lobsters are not lobsters because they don't have claws.

I love the lobster they catch down around Cabo. It has a huge tail and almost no claws, and tastes fantastic.

And, langoustines are shrimp. Sorry, but that's what they are.

The Chilean Sea Bass is the USA marketing name given to the Patagonian toothfish. No lie. Go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patagonian_toothfish

I was just reading a book on our Revolutionary war.

Out side Boston harbor the British had 4 Prison Ships for holding American Prisoners. The Ships were the perfect prison, escape was impractical, a minimal amount of men to guard it and it floated on a food source.

At one point there was a prisoner uprising over the food.

The British kept these poor prisoners alive by feeding them nothing but "Lobster and Grog".

Now a days we call that a Cruise Ship.

Happy Trails

Yeah, but I like shrimp, prawns, (whatever you want to call them) also.

Rock Shrimp, tastes very close to Spiny lobster I wonder if they'll make up a trade name for it.

I always thought that "langostino lobster" was really crayfish. Like from the south. They look like little lobsters.
