CARRIAGE BOLT ANTI SPIN WASHER

Postby bobhenry » Fri May 29, 2009 11:49 am

O.K. after 45 minutes of Googeling I can not find out what they call it!

HELP !

I am rebuilding the bed on a 5x8 wood floored namco trailer. I drilled each 2x8 in the center and am bolting them to the frame crossmembers. I have gone thru 2 hardware stores babbeling about what I am looking for and all I get is a blank stare.

Someone makes a washer that sets under the head of the carriage bolt. This washer has spurs that dig into the wood and the square hole in it's center holds the square neck and keeps the bolt from spinning.

Bob,

As always - McMaster-Carr is your best friend.

You mean the hardware store people didn't know what you meant when you said "Washers for square neck bolts?"

Yeah, I need 6 for my playmor. 3/8x2" at just under 8 dollars each for 18-8 stainless. They hold the floor to the chassis. Gotta wait till I win the lottery

Yep, gotta love Mr. Mac.

You'll still get the blank stare. I don't know how many times I've known more about what certain stores carry or just what certain items are in the box stores. That's why I love the 150 year old hardware store near me... The old guy behind the counter always knows what it is and where it's at.

True story... I walked into the orange box store and asked the guy in the tool crib, who had a patch in his shirt that claimed he was a tool guru, where the wormdrive saw oil is. He looked like I hit him with a frying pan. AFTER swearing up and down that saws don't need oil, I took him over to the saw section picked up a worm drive saw and proceeded to show him the cap that says "oil", and the window that says "oil level". "Ill be damned" was his response quickly followed by " we don't carry it". My response was " two minutes ago you didn't know it existed, now you're sure you don't carry it!". After I got over my initial spike of anger I just smiled and walked away and proceeded to the ancient hardware store- where- guess what- the old man knew what it was and of course, which shelf it was on.
But my favorite response to this question, asked of a box store employee, is this: Me: "Where are the bishops collars?" Employee:" Your guess is as good as mine" Now mind you, this was a plumbing aisle guy, not some 16 year old cashier.

Sorry to hijack your thread.. just got me thinking
