You'll still get the blank stare. I don't know how many times I've known more about what certain stores carry or just what certain items are in the box stores. That's why I love the 150 year old hardware store near me... The old guy behind the counter always knows what it is and where it's at.
True story... I walked into the orange box store and asked the guy in the tool crib, who had a patch in his shirt that claimed he was a tool guru, where the wormdrive saw oil is. He looked like I hit him with a frying pan. AFTER swearing up and down that saws don't need oil, I took him over to the saw section picked up a worm drive saw and proceeded to show him the cap that says "oil", and the window that says "oil level". "Ill be damned" was his response quickly followed by " we don't carry it". My response was " two minutes ago you didn't know it existed, now you're sure you don't carry it!". After I got over my initial spike of anger I just smiled and walked away and proceeded to the ancient hardware store- where- guess what- the old man knew what it was and of course, which shelf it was on.
But my favorite response to this question, asked of a box store employee, is this: Me: "Where are the bishops collars?" Employee:" Your guess is as good as mine" Now mind you, this was a plumbing aisle guy, not some 16 year old cashier.
Sorry to hijack your thread.. just got me thinking
