Verizon was no problem at FishCreek Pond. Reception is very good.

Last year, we watched the Tornado  (on my Blackberry Radar Map) as it approached and left the area.

Verizon is usually good everywhere where the Native Americans could send "smoke signals".

Two years ago, I only dropped my phone in the lake once. After that it didn't work, so I left it at the camp site when we kayaked.

I don't know about now, but a couple of years ago, I had ATT and it would not work there, but the folks with Verizon had no problems.

BTW: I have Verizon now. :D

I have Verizon and the last two times I camped there (around Raquette Lake), I had to drive to Lake George to get reception. Natch, even though their map said I should get something closer.

Try this: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController and put in your destination. But don't necessarily count on it. I found I could ask the locals where the nearest signal was, and lots of cars pulled over at those locations :)

This has nothing to do with reception, but re the phone in the lake...

When we were in Ireland last year, both Kathleen and I had identical dig. cameras. She went to a church and visited the lav.. she unbuckled her belt, which restrained the camera... the belt slipped and into the toilet went the camera..

she fished it out, we took it back to the hotel, put it on top of a towel on the radiator... next a.m., by taking pix and switching her sd card into mine we determined the only thing not working was the display... the camera had really become a 'point and shoot'....

it went back to canon, they repaired it at no cost, and it has worked ever since....

Kind of a toilet humor story.... luckily, if there is any luck in this story, it went in before anything else did.

as per phone in the lake, Mine gets put in a zip lock bag and I blow as much air into the bag as I can before sealing it up. I dunno if it will work, but I'm hoping it will stay dry and float long enough for me to grab it up. Same baggy used to carry my smokes and a lighter too, but I've dropped that extra weight now.

I thought the whole idea of going camping was to get away from civilization, ie: phones, computers, tv. I went camping with my siblings(four brothers, one sister) last fall on our annual camping trip and as we were sitting around the fire, I had to point out to them how ridiculous they looked. All 5 of them were sitting there staring at their Blackberrys! It was decided that all phones were to be turned off and put in the cars for the rest of the weekend.

I took my then girl friend for a geocaching hike on very stable ground. Kind of a stroll so we could talk and get to know each other better... we are walking along, she whips out her cell phone and calls her daughter in TX and I feel like the third leg for the next 15-20 minutes..

Another time, I took her to the poshest restaurant in Hartford, CT... lunch cost me $122.00...... great lunch, btw... 20th floor.. wonderful view out of floor to ceiling windows.

Her cell phone rings. She takes the call.. people are staring. At these prices, there are no low lifes here and I'm sure they all have cell phones (turned off or to vibrate).

I say, the maitre de is looking at you... she says, I don't care who is looking at me, I'm taking this call......

we are no longer seeing each other.

Hope you didn't drive an hour and a half just to make a phone call on your cell! Would have been easier to find a pay phone!

When you run an Internet business and one of your clients has a technical emergency while you're camping, a pay phone doesn't cut it. Yup, long drive just to clear out a client's email issue.
