New Emoticon

Postby TomS » Thu Sep 29, 2005 3:20 pm

I just created a new emoticon. It is for those times when we spend more than we want to for materials or when we make costly mistakes.

Today was one of those days. I reaized that I ordered the wrong hinges for my doors. To make matters worse, I can't return them because I already cut the damn things. So, I'm about to whip out the ol' credit card and order another damn set of door hinges.

Mike, you're welcome to add this emoticon to the forum. And it won't cost you a dime.

We need to define a new currency - "TearDrop Units"... Maybe 1 Teardrop Unit = $50

Might be easier to explain "1 TearDrop Unit" to the significant other then $50!

Whaddaya think?

Mike,

I revised that emoticon. This one has a transparent background. It should work better against the various background colors on this site.

Tom,
So what kind of hinges are the wrong ones? Maybe one of us can use them and get you some of your money back.

I got 3" wide (open width) stainless steel narrow clearance piano hinges. They came without holes. My plan was to install them with both flanges inside the door with only the hinge pins exposed.

In order for the door to close properly, I needed to drill and counter sink the screw holes. For some reason, I had it in my head that I'd bought an aluminum hinge and would have no problem doing this. Well, I managed to cut them both to 32 1/8 inches long. Next, I tried to drill the screw holes using a drill press. I drilled a couple of holes before the bit started over heating. I tried another brand new bit and lubricated it with plenty of oil. No go. I figured that If I coudn't drill a 1/8" hole, there was no way I'd be able to countersink them.

Soooo..... after going back up stairs and checking my reciept, I realized that I'd bought stainless steel hinges. No friggin wonder I couldn't drill through it.

I just ordered 2 inch wide pre-drilled and pre-countersunk stainless steel hinges. My new plan is to mount them on the outside of both the door and trailer body.

BTW -- I looked into Grant's offset hinges. Unfortuantely, my walls and doors are too thick for them.

Oyyy...my sympathies, Tom. (And I love that emoticon!)

I just hope you don't get too depressed at what happens at Fenway starting tonight.

JUST KIDDING! I DON'T CARE! YOUR FRIENDSHIP IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ME THAN A BUNCH OF YANKEES!

(Kind of.)

them fancy titanium coated bits will go through stainless, and once the hole is drilled, a countersink shouldn't have an problem cutting into it..on another note, them fancy tapered step bits will cut right through stainless..i know this because i used to install water conditioning systems, and the reverse osmosis unit needs a hole in the sink, and all sinks are stainless..the step bits go right through.

"Hon, how much was that shiny pipe?"

"Just one motorcycle unit"

"Oh, OK then"
