roswell build

Postby dandan » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:23 pm

6 hours today.

finished the welding on the body joints,
cut & drilled the suspension unit & tow hitch plates,
then welded the suspension unit plates to the chassis.

couldnt resist a quick test-fit.
(suprised if it didnt fit as the chassis was made in it up-side down)
Image
Image
will take it off again tomorrow to complete the floor.
also ive still got to weld a couple more sections into the chassis, & paint it.

then its probably the sky-light & door next, fenders last.
best rgds dan.

Looking good Dan. Putting off the fenders till last, trying to make sure I watch the build to the exciting conclusion? (I would anyway)

I have done enough aircraft inspection to appreciate the craft involved, this is one build I am keeping track of.
Did you by any chance use aluminum for the frame?

thanks for your kind comments Guys.
they provide great encouragement to me.
Sorry Del, im leaving the fenders till last cos the ali hasnt been collected yet.
have developed the fender side blanks on paper. they shouldnt be too
much trouble. (famous last words)
think the door will be more of a challenge.

Hello Mr Shadow Catcher,
must admit, the only aviation bits ive done before is ali componement
repair welding on preserved jet fighters.
not touched aircraft skin before.
really could do with an english wheel for double curvature work.
may make one for the fenders if i get time.
(may be a bit too hopeful for that one)

aluminium was used for the inside body ribs.
the chassis frame is out of mild steel.
this helps with cost, time, strength & added weight.
(its got quite a low center of gravity.)
im still quite suprised how light the whole thing is at this present time.
there may be a paveing slab added behind the axle to increase weight.
we will see.....
Best rgds dan.

everything fully stick welded.
will be amazed if anything drops off !

just seeing where to place the jacks.
Image

will have to extend the jack handle to miss the bodywork.
Image

after fitting the jacks its just some tube to weld on to act as electrical
conduit, then its ready for painting.

hope to be on it again thursday.
best rgds dan. :)

Hi Del,
reckon acsess for the handle will clash at the rear with the fenders.
will look again for the front ones.
may be able to mount these 2 on the a frame.
they are not attached yet so will try it out on thurs.
best rgds dan. :)

When I add fenders, I will most likely move mine. The fenders do get in the way. The tail hangs out further than the sides, so gaining access to the handle would be more difficult in the rear than the side (worse on a rainy day).

was thinking more like
http://www.mikenchell.com/images/aero-simple-vrml-2.wrl
but cant find the drawings for it. :o

anyway, 1 hour only today.

decided the final resting places for the jacks.
had to add a bit more to the chassis for the front ones.
Image

wanted to keep a bigger footprint as possible for stability & not encroach
on ground clearance too much.
Image

chassis is allmost ready for a coat pf paint.
really need to be getting on with the door.
got a 6 day weekend comeing up soon.
last chance to get the build back in schedule. :worship:
best rgds dan.

only 1 hour today. :(

bolted the jacks on tapped plates to avoid moisture entering the
chassis tubeing & rotting it from the inside-out.
here is the rear,
Image

& here is the front.
Image

only moments away from painting.

Looks great Dan! I sure wish I had half your skill with a welder.

How thick are the plates you used for the axle ends? Those look mighty beefy.
