"Vintage" Propane Stove Resto-rebuild

Postby grant whipp » Thu Jul 23, 2009 3:57 am

Question: If it's near 20 years old, could you consider a propane gas stove "vintage" ...?

I won't go into the "whys", but I recently found it necessary to "clean up" an old propane gas stove that I'd retrofitted into a teardrop something close to 20 years ago, so it could go into a new teardrop. What I started with was a Century Primus brand very similar to this one:

After completely disassembling the stove, I took all the tin to the powdercoater and had them sandblast everything and then cover it all with a nice coat of semi-gloss GI Green. After re-assembly and pre-fit into the drawer it is destined to go into, I thought it looked a little bland ... nice & new looking, but nothing special, ya know? So, I took some leftover countertop material that matched what is in the trailer, and trimmed it to fit the lid of the stove and glued it on. Then, I called on a pinstriper friend to lay down some red and yellow stripes to set everything off, and this is the result:

Now, for what I'm into this, I could have gone out and bought two brand new units with piezo-electric lighters and chrome splash guards ... but, they don't make 'em like this anymore (with the rubber gas-line that comes out on the left), and more importantly, no matter how bright & shiny & modern a new stove might have been, it just wouldn't end up "flowing & fitting" into its new home and looking like it is an integral part of the galley cabinetry (which I will show pictures of, soon!). Besides, it's all just part & parcel with the history & special features that are going into this teardrop ... ;) ...!

Thanks for looking!

Grant...it's all good! Nice job on the resto, and really a nice touch with the laminate on the top and striping! The thing is...no one else has anything else like it, separates you from the rest of the crowd and that's what counts in my book! I'm sure some people think I'm stupid for all the hoops I may jump through to get the look on something I want, but so what....it's the look I want and nobody's dollar but mine! Doug

How do you do it?

Postby eamarquardt » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:20 pm

I recently had an old doctor's office scale that I bought for $15 (35 years ago) powder coated (I personally did the sandblasting in my back yard). It cost me almost $200 (and another $200 for the Nickel plating!). Do you have something on your powder coater, is he/she a friend, or did I get ripped off? Powder coating here (just north of LA) seems really expensive. Maybe, depending on the answer, I might relocate to your area for powder coating!

By the way, the stove looks great!

Cheers,

Gus

Hi, Gus!

No, nothing "on" my powdercoater ... ;) ... but he is a friendly vendor, and I do a lot of work with him, so I get the "good-guy/long-time-customer" wholesale pricing ... :D ...! Even at that, I don't pay anywhere near that $200 to get one of my chassis powdercoated! I know things are really expensive in La-La-Land ... maybe moving up here would seem cheaper, but don't expect to get paid anything close to what you are getting down there, either ... :? ...!

BTW ... did you see/hear that Guy is throwing together a little shin-dig up in Southern Oregon Aug. 7-9 ...? If you came up for that, you could check out some properties 'round here on your way through ...

i've paid $165 for a mailbox beadblasted & coated. people will charge what the traffic will allow. and with one piece & special color, you'll have to listen to the "minimum-set up song" too.

will/ has the formica top inset stand up to the heat or is this not a working stove? i've removed laminate counters with a propane torch, so unless contact cement has made dramatic changes in the last few years, i think the top might slip over time
