Ron

This all the pics I have.
This one appears to have threads in the plate. Would be easiest to remount the spare with it in table setting, anyone ever mounting an older German wheel will know what I mean.
Image

This one uses bolts. Would recommend tack welding the bolts to the plate or if you ever have to use the spare make sure all children have loud earphones, cause they do not need to hear what you are about to be yelling!
Image

Table top idea. No I do not remember what the aluminum was from, that is riveted to the hubcap.
Image
Hope this helps or somebody who went to ITG3 Will chime in, who also seen these neat little tables.

The conncetion bolts I find interesting.

I got these from http://www.etrailer.com/
they offer sever brands. this is by hidden hitch.

Show them these and the one that Del offered and of course Ol' Bitty's.

The style of bike rack that this one is, would make a good stand up bar. There are 2 arms that swing up and lock into position (meant for 4 bikes). But hey, pull off the bike mounts, add some pine, a little bit of varnish, and voila, a bar table.

I did -- I went with the bike rack (except that it hasn't arrived just yet). I got this:

Image

I got it for $100 plus $50 shipping -- and I really couldn't see any local welder designing those swinging arms (properly designing them) without charging something like that. Maybe I'm wrong!

I plan to tear off the top bit. I can use the "bolts around a square tube" type spare tire mount that I already have, and bolt the tire around this upright. I'll probably do that, for the short term. It'll help provide extra protection for the back of the teardrop. I'm still pondering how to design something that will be able to flip over to become a table. That's the part I can't quite make out, in most of these pics!

The cutouts for the taillights are visible in the bumperup picture.

Gus

Gus when I first saw yours I thought no then after time I thought well yes.
I went to some Jeep 4x4 sites and they offer other ways to hold a tire.
Using an "A" frame with the tire one the bottom bar of the "A".
then I thought about my already bought Tire mount from HF and it could mount on the "A"
this does not work becuase then the tire can not turn up. But no one says I have to use the top of the tire for a table.
I did this idea because I wanted the tire at the rear of the trailer to protect it from cars behind and put other thinks in the tung box.
Bothenry's and Del's idea got my head to spin. and Godskid has gotten started on the project faster then I.

GodsKid ...have you gotten the bike swing?? you might start you own site so you can get direct answers for your project and report your results here. So these ideas stay in one place for others who what to do it got some ideas of what has been done.

I for one never seem to stay in line and find new ideas
 :? I mean new directions.

eamarquardt you got me thinking. the tire could be facing down.
and a frame for the tire could be square.
Flip down (tire below) swing out so off to the side so we can get in the hatch. and a square or oblong table can be there for extra counter space.
Image
The first one I saw the "A" idea
Image
This is one offers space for jack if you have one
Image
this one offers an alternative swing hook up idea
these are all in metal I would use wood with metal reinforcement peices.
and be on a much smaller scale and not as heavy.
Using hinges for both swing down (door hinge) and sing out (gate hinge)

I've got the bike rack, and it swings sideways nicely. I've working up a model in cardboard, to make sure the pivot (of the wheel into table) works and doesn't hit itself. Then I'll take my cardboard to a welder and say "pretty please"? I'll post pics when the cardboard is done.

Godskid that sounds great. We all look forward to seeing what you came up with.

I continue to persue my idea of a larger flat-er table.
Figuring this out is very time consuming and fasinating.

I have the 2x4's for the swing bar with some metal reinforcement.
The table top 4' aprox. long and about 3 feet wide.
I am thinking of making the table of aluminum to reduce weight and attaching it to 2x4s with Iron reinforcement.
I had at first thought of a plywood top but now aluminum sheet or grid.
The tire is from HD 20 inches in diamider and not as heavy as those car or truck size tires. and will be using the HD tire holder as described farther back with picture.
I am unsure as to the hight of the table at this point. the distance from the ground to the top of the bumper is 20 inches, which would be the lowest it would be. a cable or chain will hold it flat

I did figure how to make it about 3 feet higher, but is to complicated to explain. :?

Just figuring out the tire turn for the tire table top looks trickey.
Most welders understand how to make it so with pictures or models to go by.
the simple approch is often the better one.

An ah-hah! moment

Postby godskid » Fri Sep 18, 2009 6:48 pm

I found a dish antennae mount in the trash can. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what it is, because there was a second one with the dish antennae still attached. It had a rotating connection on both ends of the pipe.

Remove a bunch of mounting tar from the bottom, flip it over, and voila!! A spare tire mount that rotates to horizontal to become a table surface. Pics 1 and 2, the dish mount in original orientation.

Flip it over (pic 3)

And the top can be rotated to spare tire position (pic 4)

or table top position (pic5).

Godskid, how is it coming.

I have worked out a mock of what I want to do and after camping with the SLO gathing her in California. I realized that sence I do not have a Galley like the teardropers do. I would need to have the table open out on eather side of the trailer.

I will use two gate hinges (one on each side of the bumper) remove the bolts and insert pins inplace so I can open left or right.

I am using a L metal peice from an bed frame as my main sepport. The tire will hang alittle below the bumper line ... my axel is lower then that so it will not hit anything while traveling.

I have yet to design the table but it will be 15 x 30 15 deep 30 wide.
Image
will work much like this.

tire will rest on outside of "L"s and table will rest inside of "L" s (L being the sape of the bar holding them up. So when I am driving down the road you will see the tire the H patern if the backet and the bottom or back of the table.

A cable will be run through the tire and supports and be attached to anchor Points on each side of the trailer. So if God forbid it does fall off or get hit it will not fly off and go through a car window, like suggested earlier.

Godskid did you get yours done got any pixs??

anyone else try and build one??

I have mine almost done. I have not designed the table yet but figure if I have it up and ready for the table I will be able to have a stage to figure out the correct size and configuration of the swing up table.

I will first put on the hinges figure out how to best mount them then assemble the other parts see what needs to be fixed then take it all a part paint it then reassemble it.

I should have it done for the IRG.

Ron.

God bless Marge

Not until now did I realize how important these support units for opening the bar were until I put on the hinge and realized it could not hold the weight of the 2x4 and tire and table.

a support bar will be needed not only on both sides to help hold the bar up but in the middle under the bumper so it will have support during bumps and other forces.

 thaniks for the complete pictures not just the tire that helps alot.
Looks like I will need some deeper research and look for parts that I can't find in a common hardware store.

I am close to half done with my project.
I have the concept down and it will be of wood the parts holding the table are made of an old bed frame.
The Tire part is a little unsteady so I will need to figure how to bolt the tire attachment to the metal trailer body to steady it during bumps.

I am about down load pixs of where I am at.

I haven't gotten a good photo yet (the teardrop is still in the garage, which is crowded and dim) but here is my current work with the bike rack tire holder / table. I need a better means to secure it in either position; right now, the swivel is great but the "afix" in one spot isn't present.

That looks really great. what I would suggest it to take shot close up of joints in question and go to general and do a link to this catagory of the site and see if the rest of the crew can come up with some ideas that might not otherwise be watching this site.

I hope to have my pixs up loaded soon maybe I will try to night.

well Here is where I am at, as I get it all figured then I will paint it and show the completed unit.

Image mounted both sides attached

Image Riders side or curb side

Image Using Gate hinge I removed the bolt and replace it with a longer one that I will one day drill into so I can put in a pin and screw on a nut when on the road.

Imagetable bar and spare tire holder (HF)

Image layed out on the floor table top not the real one.
