Need help with A-Frame tongue math

Postby dh » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:36 pm

OK, I havent used geometry since I took a class back in '97

So, my trailer is X" wide, the A frame tongue members are at a 55 deg angle (Isn't that industry standard?) How long will the individual tongue members be, and how long will the tongue, be?

You don't have to use the stamped 55 degree coupler, unless you have already purchased it. I decide on a tongue length, then run the A members back under the trailer past the front cross member into the side rails. I attach them just aft of the coupler, a straight one. I find that it gives me a longer tongue which makes it easier for loading the truck, and I don't get into the trailer front when backing and it's somewhat easier to back, as it's not so "fast" on the turning. I think that the 55 degree coupler works better on a wider trailer, but with the widths that these have, it causes your tongue to be shorter if you want the A members under the front for support. Trying to figure out my options

Postby dh » Thu Sep 03, 2009 6:33 pm

I'm just trying to figure out what it would be though. I like to plan everythng to death and explore every option before I build.

I remember there is a way to figure length without having to lay everything up, but I haven't done it since high school.

I can hear Mrs. Coldwell now, "I told you that you would need to know this..."
