Oh! That's a good one, Chip! :applause: Especially since they will have "Queen Bunk Beds". Hmmm....How about 'The Queen Bunker' or 'The Bunker'? ....Just a couple more ideas for ya, Al.

Of course, once you get it all painted up, something may just pop out at ya and make perfect sense.

"Would not a teardrop by any name be just as sweet"

Postby Alfred » Mon Sep 21, 2009 7:12 am

Wow!

Those are all good ideas. I guess it would make sense to try to incorporate the 'five' in there somehow. I imagine that is going to be one of the most common questions - "You fit 5 people in that"?

Forgot to mention my 6yo has her heart set on calling it "The Princess Camper". My 4yo suggested "The camper camper" or "The camping camper".

I've also thought about trying to incorporate a nautical theme, as I may make some of the decorations/trimming in a nautical theme, plus we go camping at the beach alot. ("5 at the seaside" or "High 5 at Surf Side"?). I kind of agree, I think it will name itself before it is done. Now, just gotta get it done.

Rained the last two days up here in the mountains. My garage is taking on water again. Hope the workshop dries out by the time I find time to work on the camper again. I have a dehumidifier down there but I am afraid it is fighting an uphill battle down there at the moment!

Hey Gang,

Its been raining two days/night nonstop here in Asheville and my garage/basement/TD workshop continues to have water, despite the best efforts of my dehumidifier.

If it keeps raining I think the most appropriate name for the camper may be "Submarine"!

Holy Moly Al, Thats a serious build you have one there.

I hope I can come close to something like that in the finish you have there.

WRT the paint and exterior sealing of all the wood, would watered down/ diluted Yacht varnish as an undercoat not save you some of the paint soaking in, and then followed with the Marine paint.

I have used it in my bus to good effect, and also painted the floors with it.

Just an idea.
Greetings from England.

Rian.

Hoping to get it all done in time.

Sealing

Postby Alfred » Sun Sep 27, 2009 3:12 pm

Hey Grizz,

I am still considering how I am going to seal it. My plan is 1/4" luan for the outer skin, so I am going to have to seal it good. I am thinking CPES, then some sort of marine quality paint. I am trying to balance effectiveness with price.

hey Al,,, I cant remember for sure who gave me this advice on sealing wood,, but they have had real good luck with this method,,, I used it and it worked pretty good ,,, apply 2 or more coats of water based poly urethane to the bare wood,,,, sand inbetween coats to smooth things out,,, then apply 2 or 3 coats of maring grade spar varnish over the polyurethane,,, again sand between coats,,,, after ya get everything real smooth then leave it if it looks good or ya can paint it with a good grade of paint,,, now if you gonna use metal,,, fiberglass or some other covering then ya dont need to put as many coats and ya wont have to sand as much,,,, Its not expensive and seals up real nice,,,, the Poly doesnt have uv blockers in it but the spar varnish does,,, plus the spar varnish isnt as brittle as the poly,,,,, Poly first though then spar varnish,,,

Hey Chip,

This may be how I go with it. It would be really cool if it looked good enough to just use the clear coating to see the wood underneath. We'll see.

Thanks Chip!

Just in case you decide to use this method and happen to see my earlier comments on polyurethane, I really should update you. My first coats of poly stunk up the whole house, killed all my goldfish and houseplants, and stiffened up my legs for a few days. Later I posted that I'd had trouble with part of one panel not drying, apparently because it had some bug spray and Windex on it. Now I realize the trouble was the (oil based) poly, mineral spirts, and the other chemicals reacting and releasing the poisonous stench! Duh. Today the humidity was at last low enough to "paint" again and it was no problems whatever. It even smelled rather pleasant. Now I again plan to use the polyurethene / spar varnish system.

What finish to put on the exterior

Postby Clifford Loose » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:29 am

Alfred I am at the same stage of the build as you. Trying to figure out what finish to put on the exterior of the camper. I have thought about epoxy and car paint. I am in the same boat as you in trying to protect from the elements with out breaking the bank. I am just down the road from you in Otto NC. My daughter is living in Ashville and going to AB tech. your build is looking great. keep up the great work.
