Anybody ever use this one ? Electrical Converter/Charger

Elixir Industries ELX-30 Amp.

Converter/Charger/Control center. Seems to be easy to hide or left to see. It has a nice black cover and a varidible speed cooling fan.

I found a big variation in price online so it might be good to shop around. This is a link to some discussion about the unit.

One person in the thread complained about noise from the unit when it was under a load.

One other thing concerned me a little. There was no mention of 3-stage charging in the online description. This feature means the voltage output is automatically decreased in steps as the battery becomes fully charged. With a 3-stage converter it can be left connected to the battery indefinitely to maintain the battery. Although the ELX 30 might work fine, I would still go with the WFCO 25 or 35 amp converter. Mine is the WFCO 8725, and 25 amps has been plenty for my needs. :)

Chris,

I have a converter/charger in the gypsy trailer, not the same brand as the one you asked about. It made wiring the 12 volt easy as it had built in fuses and terminal strips. Mine is under the bed and is pretty quiet. Money well spent in my opinion.

50.00 bucks seemed fair. I will have 2 110v outlets /2 12v outlets /3 12 volt lights 1 overhead cabin and 1 galley hatch and 1 outside porch light no more than that. Will it handle that guys.
Thanks

Mine's a 20 amp converter. I have one galley light, two reading lights, two overhead lights (I should have put in only one), two porch lights, 3 12v outlets, and 3 110v outlets.

I am sure you all know this but just in case it might be helpful to someone, the 110V outlets in the trailer are not part of the converter load. They are just a load on the campground power outlet. Also a 30 amp converter will only draw about 5-6 amps AC at max load.

There is a 10 to 1 difference between AC and DC amps as expressed by the little formula Amps = Watts/Volts. That would make the converter amp draw 3 amps AC at 30 amps DC load, but there is some inefficiency in the converter such as heat produced. The formula can also provide the number of amps used by a light or appliance if only the watts (and volts) are known.
Good luck with your build!
