Fall? What Fall?

Postby dakotamouse » Sun Oct 11, 2009 9:39 pm

Man, did we have a change of weather here! This summer was unusually cool. We only had 3 days that were in the 90s as opposed to the summer of 2006, when we built our teardrop, and we had a week of 100's. One day was even 113.

This summer a lot of us felt cheated when it came to weather. We were all hoping for a nice long fall. OH HECK NO!

On Thursday night the temps dropped in the low 20's. Some of the trees here didn't even have a chance to change color they just dropped. It was almost as if they were schocked out of their leaves and went naked overnight!

We're hoping our camping days aren't completely over yet!

We keep cycling from fall to winter to spring and a little summer. :? I wish the weather just picked a season and stayed with it.

They're not. Keep an eye on your 10-day forecasts, pick a weekend that looks to be favorable and go for it at the last minute. Just pack additional clothing.

It is downright disappointing when we don't get the seasons we have learned to expect. We never got very many real hot days here, either...

Are you from the area originally? I ask because I have no idea how consistent the weather patterns have been in that region.

For example, where I live in coastal southern California with it's Mediterranean-style climate, there are no "normal" weather patterns, only trends. It literally has been determined that there is no consistent "average" weather in this region. I thought that to be odd when I first read it.

The trends I speak of are the Santa Ana Winds that typically occur in mid-to-late fall and can occur as well through February. Rainfall, as you may have heard, is never normal here. It rained over six inches one night in Sept. '04 from midnight to 5 am. I remember, as I had to work outdoors in it.

Well....normal...hmmmmm! For the last 10 years or so he have had drought. Very mild winters and not much snow. Last winter we got hit and we were only one inch shy of the all time record. We had 101 inches of snow. Our summers are usually kinda hot. Hard to imagine, what with us being in NORTH Dakota. This year we had plenty of rain but cool temps. We did need the water though. Lakes that were low are now filled up.

When I was a kid I remember lots of cold and lots of below zero weather. That hasn't been the case the last 10 years. So we were due for a hard winter last year. But sheesh, you'd think we could have been due for a real summer.

I was born in Seattle and lived there for the first 7 years. Winters there were, well, short? It would snow in the morning and be gone by the afternoon.

Is any of this making sense?? I really shouldn't try to type after two apple martinis... :tipsy:

heck...we dont even have 4 seasons over here...we just have hot, not hot...and then maybe about 20-30 days of cold...but, then again...cold here is anything below 40...ha

if we get snow or ice down here--youd better go get the kids from school...schools close, banks close, roads close, power might go out....etc...but we sure have some fun in those times....bonfires, partying, everybody is home from work...lol

My sentiments exactly  Always wondered about my family's desire to settle in the south, but when I hear of below zero temps and snow, I know why

You ain't kidding! We went from sunny and 78 to snowy and 34 in one day. I went from a/c to heat in the same day.

I didn't get to blow out my sprinkler because I didn't expect to do that for a couple more weeks. Next thing I know, I hear water gushing on that really cold day when it dropped to the low 20's overnight. I caught it before it got too bad. It broke a piece (which looks fixable) but it's a pain nonetheless.

Woke up this morning to snowfall. Wet, very slick snowfall. By noon there were 54 accidents recorded in town. Just east of town there was an unfortunate fatality on the interstate.

Our average temp for October is supposed to be 61. Hey, maybe that ice age they warned us about in the 70s is actually here!

I feel your pain !! :snow

We had a dusting the other day so I drained the water tank and put in some antifreeze and ran it thru the pipes in the tear so hopefully she's prepared.
