Bed box springs. What are they good for? And why do we use them?

I have a piece of plywood across the top of mine after part of it broke. I am left wondering why is money spent on the box spring in the first place?

Great Topic because I had always wondered this same thing. While traveling to Mexico almost every year since 2001 the traditinal beds are only a Mattress no box springs. This led me to question why do we spend $200- 400 more for box springs which in my opinion amounts to nothing more than a spacer between the frame and the top matt. to raise it to a level for ease of entry. So i built a frame, raised it to what would be the top of box spring as far as height, with a small inset to keep the matt. from sliding around and drawers underneath for storage and all is well. No more squecky box springs, less movement when getting in or out for your partner and much more comfortable. Now I'm sure a Matt. saleman will chime in and say the Box springs has some other use but this worked for us and we have been happy with the conversion .

I am watching this closely as I have wondered the same thing for years...
It also reminds me that we are due for a new mattress here soon...

The purpose of the box-spring is threefold:

to help raise the mattress's height, making it easier to get in and out of bed;
to help absorb shock and reduce wear to the mattress; and,
to help create a perfectly flat and firm structure for the mattress to lie upon.

It seems like box-springs are rather superfluous, except for aesthetic reasons.

We bought the daughter a new captains style bed a couple years ago, its comfy and there is no box spring. But due to the drawers under it its already plenty high off the floor.

Threw those suckers out 20 years ago and never looked back. I've always had Scandinavian platform beds for my main and guest bedrooms, so no box springs required (or sprung on you with marketing like you need it).

Where I think the scam originates from are the mattress companies. Many times they will not warranty their mattress if you don't buy a box spring to go with it, even if you already have an old one. They just want you to buy THEIRS. Bogus. It's not needed... (and just how many mattress warranties do you know of that have actually been honored by those companies?)

There is a big difference between a "box of springs" and a "foundation". Years a go we had box springs and they really did something. Now the foundation is just a box.

We got a Beauty Rest and hate it. Had to buy a new foundation so I could get the short one. Bed was too high. I wouldn't buy another Beauty Rest ever.

The really old box springs, that were just a mass of springs and a steel frame are great!!! Tie a cable on them...add some weight or the neighbor hood kids and drag them behind a tractor...levels up a yard great prior to seeding a lawn. Doug

Good Doug, I think I rode on the top of one as a child.

We have a Sleep Number bed ( The Number is the number of dollars they cost, way too expensive. Oh well, I'm married and do what I'm told) and the mattress sits on some plastic boxes that replace the box spring. It's great but my $30 Coleman air mattress in the standy sleeps better.

I have never used a boxspring. Crib, bunk beds, separated bunk bed, platform bed, and now water bed from 1980. Not to be left out numerous cots, hammocks, coffin beds and the least comfortable the ground.

That's my son-in-law keeping an eye on it for me.



Now we sleep on an air bed on top the mattress. Much better!

i have always wondered about that myself, when i bought my last bed the box springs were"were part of the deal" my girlfriends mom has always have her matteress on an old water bed frame. and if you think of it when alot of people when they move in to a new house it always the materess is always on the the floor the first night
