Mini Computer...Netbook

Postby Creamcracker » Sun Nov 08, 2009 8:31 pm

I think I remember a thread about these before...Mike don't you have one? I can't find the thread so if anyone can link me to it I'd be appreciative. However, am I correct in understanding that you can surf the web with one if you have a wireless link...but what else can you do...they don't seem to have much memory but can you write a WORD document with them? Do they come with any programs pre-loaded? If anyone has one I could use a review...thanks Philip

the EEEPC was on the bleeding edge of what is now called Netbooks...

I had one for a while... but I sold it, because it duplicated what I already had in a small laptop pc. And the 10" screen and the small keyboard was just a little bit too small for me.

I have a 14.1" screen and a full size keyboard on my laptop.

But if you like the small screen and the small keyboard, it's a nice machine.

(I used a 200lx, and later a Jornada 720 and 728 for many years, so I know small!)

but here's the thread... http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=23804

Netbooks are fully functional machines, but they trade small keyboards and screens for portability and price. My wife and I both have Dell Mini 9 netbooks and we like them a lot, although we usually use them with Bluetooth mice, as the built-in trackpad is atrocious. They are really easy to carry though. You can also usually bump the memory up to 2GB which makes the OS more responsive.

I recommend you try one before you commit. Like Mike, I've been a long time user of ultrasmall laptops, having had a series of Sony VAIO 505s and C1 PictureBooks, so small doesn't bother me.

I keep my eeePC by the "easy chair." Fine for surfing, shopping, googling, (specially if the wife/kids are on the other computers) but I can't type on it. One finger pecking only.
If it's not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

Love mine. Gave away the standard laptop.
It travels in this lunch bag. I have the Aspire with a 6 hr battery. Small screen is an issue when looking at a page of pix but I can live with that.

I have both the EEEPC 900 and and the Acer One. The EEE runs linux while the Acer runs XP.

The acer is much easier to use than the Eee due to the slightly larger keyboard, the better touch pad and the brighter more readable screen.

The other differences were due to choice. For instance, the Eee has a 2 gig solid drive while the Acer has a 140 gig hard drive.

The Eee beat the acer in price. The Eee cost me $170 new and does all the web stuff I want and seems impervious to viruses.

They sit on the arm rests of the couch and chair in the living room when not in route to someplace.
