Found a New Tool for Cutting Aluminum

Postby John6012 » Thu Nov 03, 2005 4:44 pm

I don't know if anyone has used a Rotozip before to cut aluminum, but it works great! Only thing, is to go clockwise otherwise it will jump around and tear up your aluminum. It's fast, and fewer chips - or at least smaller than a router.

I used it extensively on my teardrop. In fact I cut through two sheets of .030" aluminum sandwiched in between the two 3/8" thick 4' x 8' sheets of plywood.

When cutting aluminum, I found that if you spray a little light weight oil on the path to be cut, the blade will not clog up and it cuts like butter.

I used it with a router edge bit to cut the fan hatch in the ceiling, the formica on the counter top, as well as the aluminum skin for the doors. Simply lay the aluminum over the door and clamp together, then follow the door for a perfect cut....window cutout too!

I like my rotorzip!

I caught it on sale at HD for $69. Regularly $149. I want the jigsaw handle now.

Glad to see others use the Rotozip. I was building a cottage and needed one and bought one off Ebay for $11.00 case included.

I was wondering if any of you could post a photo of the Rotozip so I would know what it looks like - sounds like a great way to go...

Maybe I can find one of them here in reindeerland... :D

All our best to you..

Heikki... here is a linky...not sure how to descibe...do y'all have Dremell tools over their or maybe something known as a rotary carver...any way it is something like a router that uses a specialty "spiral" or rotary bit...this bit cuts from the side and can be used similarly to a plnuge router...due to the length of the bit, it can cut deeper than a regular router bit...there are many specialty attachments and bits and burs for all manner of jobs

Great tool however, when cutting anything over 1/2" be VERY SLOW I learned the hard way and the bits (for really good ones) are a little pricey.

Heikki, the dremel and the rotozip are the same type of tool except the rotozip is several times larger and more powerful...kinda like an industrial version of the dremel or more in line with a slim line router...I don't believe there is any interchangeability between their respective bits...however they do have bits that do similar things/jobs
