Axle relocation on HF trailer

Postby suckerpunched » Mon Feb 15, 2010 9:39 pm

Been awhile since I've been here but finally got the time to start my tear.....I remember reading about moving the axle towards the rear on the HF 4x8 heavy duty with 12" wheels.....necessary for door clearance or center of gravity????? thanks.....Terry
If you see my harley on a trailer,,,,call the police cause it's being stolen...

Moving the axle back will help ensure the tongue weight isn't too low. The galleys in most tears weigh enough that they'll lift the tongue up, and cause some bad sway.

Depending on your design, profile, and whether or not you have a galley, you might need to move it or you might not. Look around on the forums a bit, there's loads of information on it. ;)

I have that frame. Moved axle back 4 inches, half the distance recommended and built a 5x10 trailer on it. Balance is just right. Just dumb luck. Follow your gut.

You can tweak the balance some by shifting the battery around and adding a tongue box if needed. Remember, balance is also how you load the trailer, not just how you build it.

And yes, moving the axle gives more door clearance, though I didn't need it.
In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.

I have the HF 1700lb trailer and I'm planning on moving the axle back 5 inches from the factory setting or roughly 37 inches from the rear. I plan on building somewhat of a galley and I'm also going to mount the battery on the tongue. Hopefully it'll balance out ok,---Larry

If I'm doing a new trailer and not sure about the balance, I attach the axle at the end. Attach the axle and springs to the L-channel brackets, then use C-clamps to hold them in the place. Once the trailer body is complete, load it the way you plan to including accessories like battery, tanks, etc. Now move the axle position to get 10-12% of the overall weigh on the tongue. Then premanetly mount the axle assembly. Note; sometimes door / tire clearance will cause you to redistribute weigh to achieve a proper balance.
