Rigsby`s Scavenger 2, Update 9/11/10

Back in Sept 08 the TD bug got me , and 7 months later The Scavenger was ready to camp,

Well now the time has come to start number 2
To start with, ive decided to use the chassis that supplied the axle for number 1

Armed with my trusty angle grinder i set to reatatching the tonge, in a revised position

So build costs to date, a big fat Zero ( Read the Scavenger thread and you will know why this is relevant)
Now the search is on for some free wood to build the body

looking spot on Steve! Sorry I didn`t get down to yours on Tuesday, I had forgotten all about it

I do on the other hand need to pick your brains about my number 2 chassis, I need to loose 20" off the front and 30" ish off the rear and will need to relocate the a frame which may need a repair ( or a graft using the removed sections to repair)

I am trying to decide 100% if its worth the work to it or flog it.

Oh and that BenRoy behind the cool looking scavenger looks the dogs danglies

After laying my hands on a few lengths of studwork timbers (fa nowt) ive found that the chassis tapers in at the rear and is about 2" narrower than the front, It shouldnt be a problem though as the framework for the floor will carry all the body weight and the crossmembers can be placed virtualy anywhere to line up with the chassis mounts
I would personally sooner use a galvi chassis or a home build, as the older ones are heavy, I would strip it, flog the chassis and then get a galvi one

Congratulations on the beautiful if not frugal beginnings of build #2!

I can't help but notice, regarding the dissimilar spacing from front to rear that the rear has no cross-members and looks quite flexible. Couldn't you bend the frame in the rear rather easily the couple of inches to get everything in-line?

That is prob the best route to go down mate I think, will strip off what I neeed and flog the rest on.

Oh and Steve not to nit pick but you got your wheels on the wrong sides, directional tyres etc.

I noticed that after fitting them, but they will have to come off when i overhaul the bearings and brakes, and the wheels need a bit of a referb. Unless i just swop them for their sisters on the Scavenger


chorizon-- It wont really matter as the crossmembers will sit above the mounting holes, whatever width they are apart

Managed to get a bit of timber together and started building the frame for the floor. Just need to get it screwed together and the crossmembers let in then the chassis can be rolled out to give me a bit of room to build the body

Just a couple of pics of todays free findings, First a trunk full of assorted timber that will come in handy for the interior framing

and then a couple of new `old stock`trike fenders that a bloke had sat in his garage, swopped them for a favour

Just about got the floor frame work glued and screwed today, picking up the 10 x 5 ply tommorow. hopefully there should be a few more pics then

Not had chance to do a lot, due to my woodman waiting for his delivery of my 5x10 sheets of ply. So, with the aid of my trusty hoist, i lifted the flooring frame

Allowing me to wheel the chassis out and have a little more space. Once built, i will have to fit the wheel arches outside as i only have 2" to spare between wheels and door frame

The only other thing i have done is add an extra piece of ply under the sleeping area and fill with insulation

Im back at work now for a couple of days, hopefully then the ply will arrive and i can carry on

Yippeeeeeee, got the 10x5 9mm ply today. Should have been £25 each but 2 had damage on 1 corner (the bit im gunna cut off ) so got then for £20 each-- BARGAIN and my first spend on the build

Got the last bit of insulation in and then layed the floor and fixed

Rolled the chassis back in and fitted the floor in possition, and mocked up the side and designed with electricians tape

Then rough cut to shape

I managed to get a free caravan door and frame to use in the tear. I will just be using the top half, but if saves having to make a door, and will seal up nice and water tight

What a great start! I love free stuff but don't find a lot of it around here. People are more frugal I guess.

Thanks for the reply Miriam, I thought i was the only one posting on my thread. It gets a bit disheartening talking to yourself
