Spare Tire Placement

Postby Newman39Fan » Mon Mar 22, 2010 5:18 pm

So, I am trying to decide where to mount my spare tire. Specifically I have the 1195# HF trailer, however any ideas would help. I am thinking under the tongue box between the frame rails. I have not actually measured this to see if the tire would even fit there, but that was my first thought. I would like it to be out of sight but semi easy to get to if I ever need it (knocking on wood right now)

BTW I did search and am surprised this has not been discussed before, so if anyone is better at searching here and has a link to a past post that would help also. And no I don’t want to build a swing away spare tire table. This is really the only thing I came up with while searching

Thanks
Arne

There are several threads on your question.

If you search "spare tire mount" and select "search all terms" You will get lots of results.

Even this search brings up mostly the same. A rear table tire mount and a front mounted tire support that hangs on the side of the tongue. I know there are some very creative people on here, and this might be a boring subject when it comes to the overall design of a TD. But the little details is what I really find interesting. So if anyone has some unique ways of mounting/hiding your tires, I would love to see them!

Searching

Postby danlott » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:20 am

Try your seach like this "spare AND tire AND mount". You need to put the word "AND" between the different words that you want to search for. Make sure the "AND" is capitilized. I can always find what I am looking for. Sometimes have to search different words to really find what I want, but not too hard.

Good luck,
Dan

The location of the spare all depends on your finished tongue weight. I'll either mount mine on the tongue or on the back, depending on how much tongue weight I have. :)

mine is under the floor... out of sight, but available when/if I need it.. takes up no valuable space. it is a bit inconvenient to get out, but I've never had to, so far...

go to link below, on left side, 4th from bottom of index, look for 'spare tire'.... click on it and scroll to bottom.

It is locked for security...

I've seen people make a sunken area above the axle.
Then storing it underneath the bedding.

I like this one if you are not planning any water tanks etc. below the galley.

Snapped this picture last weekend.

One more picture that I have at home. Using an couple eyebolts just over the axle area, attached to the floor, and by using a cinch strap with hooks to hold a tire up should suffice as well.

Another idea is to find an auto spare tire crank. Usually, trucks and SUV's that don't have a trunk will have the spare tire crank under the truck bed. Some have scavenged the crank with a chain at junk yards, and installed it on trailers.

Lots of ways to do it. I needed more weight in the back to balance out my tongue mounted battery box. I mounted it on a shelf at the very back and under the galley.... and yes, those are huge zip ties that hold it in place. So far I'm happy with it.

Good Luck,

Mike

I love the zipties!

From some of these note I have decided to finish everything first and then decide based on weight where it shoud go. If I need more tongue weight it will go up front, if I need less it will go in the back.

Thanks for the help and the lots of pics!
