Polyurethane Resin vs Epoxy

Ok been watching this topic, I just have to ask. I see where you talk about painting the poly resin but how does poly work when used over just stained wood with no paint top coat? I'm going with the wood look on my present build.

you still need UV protection of a clear coat with UV inhibiters. just like using epoxy. about the only difference you will notice is the colour. most epoxy is clear water white or amber.. poly tends to be brownish but it all depends on the type and brand of resin. the actual clarity depends on your application.. too much humidity can turn it cloudy.. mucking about with partially gelled resin can trap air and create bubbles etc or fail to wet out the cloth completely.. none of these are more than cosmetic though.. the resin is still fine but you can't hide it other than by painting. it's a one shot deal.. either you get it right or you don't. same as epoxy.

afreegreek is sure right about the color we got some supper low VOA res it turn baby s### brown .But the good new is you can get color tines . Do you have a TAP"S Plastics by you they're high price but you can buy a little of this and that and play a round .Then order from some one else .Done right fiberglass will last over a 100 years .The good part of that is as bad a you fell after working for a day on your tear think what you will fell like in 25 years to work to fix it. so a little more now is time well spend

My understanding is that polyester resin without a top coat of some kind is not waterproof, or very uv resistant. At the least you would have to use a uv resistant clear over it for protection.
Automotive clears are uv resistant, and waterproof, but require spraying and the activator for them have icocyanates, which are a carcinogen. Without proper equipment, you really shouldn't spray an automotive clear, they can be hazardous to your health.
I have opted to put an automotive paint on top for just that reason, I'm using one that does not require a clear coat.

anyway, you can go to a place like that and tell them what you're doing and they will set you up with the right products, supplies, and how to info or you can save a few bucks (maybe) and talk to the kid with the nose ring at Walmart and get some stale budget brand resin..

Okay, I'll try to find someplace local that specializes in that sort of thing.. Fiber-Tek is up in British Colombia -- I need to find someplace in Atlanta. Do you know of any chains that carry or specialize in this sort of thing? I know I could go to West Marine for epoxy, but I need poly.
