4' x 8' trailer

Since I am a newbie and to soon embark on this craziness I have to ask this stupid question. I realize using a 5' x 8' trailer is far better so you have a wider bed, but I have access to a free very nice 4' x8' trailer for free and was wondering if you could make a 5' wide teardrop on the 4' wide trailer by letting 6" overlap on each side. Absolutely, plenty of people here have done it. Browse some of the build threads for ideas.

Yup. If you want your bed to be 5' wide, you will have to build your bed over the wheel wells. But, as parnold said, lots of folks have done it. And, free is a great price!
