Tandum axle split

Postby GaryW » Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:17 pm

I have a frame with Tandum axle from a 19ft Nomad trailer (1974 vintage) and I want to know if I can seperate the two axles, I want to make a CabinCar.
The frame would be 67 inch to the outside of the frame, 76 inches to center of tire (hubface). Can I use the springs or are tandum springs not applicable to mount stright to the frame shackle when used as a single axle spring. The old trailer was weight at 4400 lbs.

I gots Cabin Fever :thumbsup:
more....
axle drop = look like 4in. overspring mounted
springs = three (3) leaf
length = 25 in. bolt hole to bolt hole

rear hub-hub 76 1/4
hubface-hubface 84

outside frame 67 1/2
inside " " 63 1/2

brakes = electric
tires P205/75R15

If I extend the plans 40 in, can I just move the axle 40in forward.
I was going to use 3x2 1/8th in channel for the frame.

Rip those hubs open, repack the bearings, and use the two best hubs on the axle that's in the best shape.

You should get new springs -- your trailer will be BOUNCY with that high of capacity springs under it.

Some of that could work, though there's a few issues.

I don't see a problem with the springs - half the previous 4400lb weight will get you somewhere near a big CabinCar weight.

You will need new spring mounts to replace the end that (I presume) is currently attached to an equalizer, but everything else should work OK.

The width of the axle means that you would have to make a very wide body, around 96", if you want to keep the wheels inside the body like on a CabinCar. So that's a pretty big jump up from the 78" or so of an original CabinCar.

One thing that probably won't work out right is the ride height, even if your axles have a 4" drop. The CabinCar needs something like 14" deck height to the top of the frame - I doubt very much that your old frame will be anywhere near that. This means you couldn't have the low-riding stance of the original CabinCar, but then maybe you're not looking for that.

The part about the 40" extension I don't understand. The wheels on a CabinCar are a loong way back so that the bed can be in front of (not on top of) them. This means that the hitch carries a lot of the trailer weight - nearly 25% - so it needs a big truck to be happy with this sort of hitch weight. I can't believe you want to increase that length by another 40", so I don't think I've understood what you plan for length.
