Nut house build begins - Update 06 Aug

Postby adlibdrama » Tue Mar 30, 2010 10:36 pm

First off, not sure if the Nut House name is going to stick, but I'm going with it for now.

I officially start 2 weeks of leave (holidays for you non military folks) tomorrow and with that, my build begins. Since they are calling for rain tomorrow morning, I'm making the drive out to pick up the CPES, and hopefully the wood in the afternoon once the rain buggers off. The sawdust will start to fly Thursday.

I'm planing on using the ultra-light frame design but may have to make some changes as I currently can't find a torsion axle for less than about $340. I'm waiting for a quote from one more guy before I re-design a new frame. As you may have figured out, I'm doing things a bit backwards and building the frame after I have the body built.

I hit Princess Auto tonight and picked up my wheels and tires as they were on sale. I also grabbed some wire and a few clamps.

I'll post some pics once things get under way.

Off to a false start.

The weather cooperated and we've had beautiful weather the last few days. Unfortunately that didn't help much. After messing around trying to fit 4x8 sheets of plywood to a 64x108 floor, I've decided to make a small change and go with an outside dimension of 60" vice inside. This way I'll be able to use 5x5 sheets of ply for the floor. A queen mattress won't fit anymore, but there will still be lots of room for a full (54"). Unfortunately, I didn't make that decision until it was too late to get to the plywood place. Now I have to wait until Saturday to get the ply for the floor and a couple of new pieces of lumber for the framing. Most places are closed up here today for Good Friday.

I just hope the weather doesn't turn before I can make some actual progress.

Starting to make some progress. This morning I finally got some of the floor glued up. I screwed the 1/4 ply to the framing to keep things in place, then flipped it over and glued and screwed the 1/8 ply in place. The screws will be removed once the glue dries. Then I'll remove the 1/4, glue in the insulation, and glue the 1/4 into place. The 1/4 side is going to be the cabin side with the 1/8 facing the ground.

There will be pics in my album soon, but I'm having some difficulty uploading images at the moment.

Got the insulation and 1/4 inch ply glued into place. The ply is secured with screws around the edge and gravity clamps in between. It's only 160kg of weight so it isn't much, but better than nothing.

I have a lead on where I might be able to find 10 foot 2x2's so I wont have to use 2x3's as the sill plate in the walls.

I have pics in my album now too.

OK, so it's been about 4 months. I've been a little distracted but have more done. Still no frame, but I'm closing in on closing in the body. The main part of the hatch and the doors are all I have left to build. I then need to do the wiring, skin the outside, and seal everything up. And of course build the frame.

I'll post some updated pic's in a bit. Hopefully tonight.

Here's the pics. Thought I had some of the wall being built, but I can't find them.

Walls are stick built, stood them up to glue the inside skin on, then laid them down again to fit the insulation. Stood them up again and glued and screwed them in place. The roof and front wall panels were built and then glued and screwed to the walls.

If you have any questions about how I built anything, I can take some pictures of specific areas.

If I can get the axel ordered, I'm hoping to have it on the road for the Labour Day weekend. Plenty of time for fall camping. :)
