In her ongoing quest to keep me healthy and to live longer, The Teardrop Nanny gave me some Steel Cut Oats third hand, passed from her mother to her, then on to me.
Her mother told her that they are supposed to better for you than rolled oats, but she didn't like them...

They take longer to cook, but I sure like 'em better than the regular stuff.

I'm curious if others have tried 'em...

I like the Steel cut oats a lot... especially when you toss in some frozen blueberries in the last 10 seconds of cooking!

Our family's with Gage on this one, we use the instant packets of Brown Sugar/Maple Oatmeal here - Kids like it a lot, we go through about a box a week.

Similarly, we recently started using some of the instant packets of hominy grits here and there, too, although the instant grits are not nearly as good as the quick stovetop grits, which in turn, are not as good as old fashioned courser stone-ground grits, although they take a lot longer to cook. Price you pay for convenience, I suppose.

Never heard of the steel cut oatmeal, but now I'm curious, may give it a try.

I Love oatmeal...But I really don't recognize any of the choices.

The stuff in the bags that you can do in the Microwave is good.

But the stuff you have to cook on the stove for a while is better???

old fashion Quaker - microwave for 2 minutes. Ditto on the blue berries. Add strawberries, blended banana with milk, and if your in the protein mood 3-4 egg whites....cooked of course.

The rest is value add. Steel cut or rolled, both use metal.

This might clear up some confusion...
OK, before today I'd never even heard of Steel Cut Oats... But as I understand it and I may be wrong... Steel Cut Oats are made, then are processed into rolled oats and rolled oats are processed into the instant stuff.
It takes about 25 minutes to make on a stove top and I liked it so much, I made a second bowl... That's 50 minutes of cooking time. I really like the hearty texture the stuff has and I too love my oatmeal topped with brown sugar... Brown sugar that melts into the hot mixture just like that big slice of butter I plop into it. :whistle: :shhh: ;)

Yup! Steel Cut Oats, a handful of Ocean Spray Craisins and walnuts thrown in at the end, topped with dark brown sugar and buttah...... 8)

I do like slow cooked oatmeal, with a little butter and brown sugar (so much for healthy). But, it really takes a lot of time to make really good oatmeal.

I'd never heard of the Steel Cut stuff. Perhaps some day when I have an hour to cook breakfast, I'll give it a try.

Steel cut oatmeal every work morning for Marcia and me. We put it in a small crock pot on a timer when we go to bed, and it is hot and ready when we wake up. I like it with a little brown sugar and raisens.

They also work really well in my homemade garlic & herb oatmeal bread. They make for a denser bread but I think the taste is better than with the rolled oats, as they tend to "hold up" better.
