Speaker question

Postby Justin & Katy » Fri Apr 09, 2010 10:12 am

I'm looking to put a car stereo in my tear but I'm only going to be running two speakers in the galley. I had planned to wire them as the front left and right speakers but it I'm wondering if I could do it a different way. Obviously head units don't crank out a lot of watts so I'll probably only be sending about 5 watts to each speaker and considering the fact that I’m using components, that's not a lot of juice. The simple solution would be to wire in an amp but with the idea that I have for a set up it would be a pain in the arse. Could I run the front and rear left channels to one speaker and the front and rear channels to the right speaker in effect double the signal and power to those speakers.

Depending on the head unit, even entry level head units, each channel will probably have an RMS of at least 20w, with Peak Power around 50w. Typically if you run components you would wire in an amp, but its probably not necessary for this application.

As for bridging the front and rear channels, probably wouldnt hurt, but you may end up overdriving your speakers.

Depending on the sound quality your going for, use your front 2 channels for the components and go get a small 6" sub and an inline crossover, and run it from the rear channels.

In order to maintain "stereo" you're going to want to wire the Left Front and Left Rear to the left speaker and the Right Front and Right Rear to the right speaker, then set your front/back fade to the neutral setting. But I'm not sure if your unit would like it wired this way??

Some head units allow you to do this, but it is best to check the installation instructions.

That being said, head power will be more than plenty for sitting around the campsie listening o music. Any more and your neighbors will probably be upset with you.

I'm sure you're right that the head unit would be enough but who wants just enough?

I also like the idea of putting in a six inch sub but I don't think i have the space to do that with my design.

Thanks for the feedback.

It will be plenty loud just with 2 channels.. You shouldn't need an amp or connecting front and rears together.. Hook it up like normal.. See how you like it then go from there. I agree you don't want it to loud because your neighbors probably dont want to hear your radio..

Another thought

Wire per normal Rt & Lft Front
Have a second set of speakers that can be placed in the galley wire them Rt & Lft Rear now you can use you fade to control speakers inside or out.

But, unless your camping in the boonies ALONE an amp should not even be in the equation, maybe.... if you let the neighbor choose the music.

Just buy a "head unit" that has the power you want. And, keep in mind, it is the big speakers, like a subwoofer, that need lots of power. High end and midrange don't need that much power to be loud.

So, if you want to have earth-shaking bass, just add a powered subwoofer.

And, if you put that kind of music power in your TD, don't camp near me.

Most newer replacement cd players put out decent power. I've thought about putting the front speakers in the cabin and the rear in the gally, using the fader to controll where the sound goes.

Check out Wall-Mart, they have some decent Pioneer and Sony cd players for under $100, most with a remote too, and I think they put out 45 watts. You can also use the headphone jack on your TV and put that audio through your stereo.

I have a plan for defense against loud music and bright lights invading my campsite. Drew this up a few years ago........
