Hey guys, anyone one have a plan they are prepared to share for a chassis, to build from scratch for a 8X5 or 9X5 . With slipper springs.

Depends, are you putting a wood frame under the floor? What do you want on the tongue? How heavy are you building?

I have some pictures of my frame on my build log, www.tdbuildlog.blogspot.com

it is for a 5' 4" x 9' benroy, with no wood frame under the floor. The frame is 5' 2" x 8' 10.5", I'll use 3/4" "face" boards front and back to take it up to 9', and my composit walls are 1" thick.

Do you already have an axle with slipper springs? Check out Dexter Axle, I got a torsion set up custom built for a lot cheaper than I could have bought an off the shelf spring set up.

If you are interested in my frame, PM me and I'll send you my scetches. I should be getting more pictures of the rolling chassis on my page early next week.

Also, not to throw a stick in your wheel, but you have your counter top right on the profile of the hatch, might cause interference with the hatch.

Metric is gooooooood gear none of this fractions guff.
As for a dexter axle I think the Aussie equivelent is an alko, to expensive.
going with a six foot long draw bar to accomodate a tool box and spare tyre. and placing the axle 45 % of body length from the rear.
Thanks for the heads up about the bench top, my plans are pretty flex, realistically they are just a guide...........pretty similar to my views on road rules

Sorry, I didn't look at your location, should have guessed you wern't over here from the Metric measurements.

6' drawbar? isn't that a little long??? I thought I made mine long and I only go 4'.

You must be going REALLY tongue heavy to have the axle that far forward with that long of a tongue. Check out Andrew's trailer balance worksheet, he has a good spreadsheet for tongue materials in relation to length and weight.

Magilla

I'm always looking for something to play with in CAD. (keeps me from building another trailer) Give me a little better idea of what you are looking for and I'll draw it and send it along. Need to know if you are planning on using a wood floor with structure or just plywood screwed to the frame. Axle placement and the like. On road or off. Lightweight or heavy duty. I'm going to start tonight with the drawing you have in this thread and a plywood floor. You want a 1800mm tongue, no problem. I'll draw it to Aussie requirements.

I work in automotive so I can draw in mm, no problem. Is your steel sized in inches or metric. 2"x2" or 50mmx50mm or a hybrid, 50.8mmx50.8mm.

I need a new Avatar. I'd put my dog up there but she doesn't look much like me. She's the skinny one.

G'day Magilla,

I have just completed my own teardrop and can give you a lot of detail if you wish. I got my running gear from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria. My Teardrop is 8x4 but the chassis could be scaled up.

Regards, Mark.

Thanks for the offer Carter thats great.
If you look in my Album you will see my last build. That was an off roader with steel frame , brakes and such.
This one is more traditional, in shape. Going to be an on roader. Wheels are 15"with low profile tyres.
Five foot (1500) wide, nine foot (2700) long and may even become four foot four inches (1300) high. Frame will be 2"x2" (50x50) duragal.

Hey Dh, I was working of Andrews percentages for the axle, at this stage it is forty percent from the rear in my drawing. The kitchen will be pretty well stocked and I like a cupboard or two. The draw bar will have a reasonable size tool box on it. Plus the weight of a spare.
I am trying to keep the towball weight at about ten percent of the vehicle weight.
My off road job's axle is about thirty percent from the rear and the tow ball weight is way over ten percent which in the end stopped me from carrying a spare on the draw bar. The camper came in at 720kg but the draw bar weight was arounfd about 110kg, forty over what I would have liked.

Magilla,
How long from the front of the front hanger on the slipper springs to the center of the axle? I see some on an Alko page that are 300mm from the front eye to center bolt but not sure if that is standard.

Working on a drawing for your review. You will have it when you wake up in the morning.

Word of the day people, Luddite.

And as I am a bit of a believer in the word... :throw PC: ......I will ask Carter if he will put up the drawing for me, as it may take me forever
