The Slumberjack Build / Revised 02/09/2011

Postby Chuckles2153 » Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:16 pm

I finally decided to take the plunge today and get started on my teardrop :applause: All i had time to do today was layout the profile, cut it out to use as a template and mock up where i think i might want the interior and galley cabinets.

Image
Here you can see the far end of what will be the profile template. :)

Image
Shot from the other direction and yes that's duct tape ! hehehehehe.

Image
Here is the rough cutout of my profile, I did something juuust bit different with the top curve. I used a 12' fiberclass tension bar to give the top a higher curve to it.

Image
How does this layout work for both interior and exterior cabinets?

Well the wife thought about it for -o- nearly a WEEK!! and decided she wanted another body profile!! :? :x so another template i'll be a makin tonight with the correct profile.
I think this time around i'll lock the door to the woodshop and turn the stereo up loud, and turn the vac. system on, and the planer, (What honey?--I swear i did'nt hear you beating on the door!!!)
No seriously, I think i kinda like the grumman2 profile also and i'll post other pics tomorrow night. Also thinking about taking a weeks vacation to really hammer down on this and try to get the thing ready for the aluminum skins, I'm shooting for june camping ( is that too crazy? )
As for the interior cabinets i'll be doing 3-D carvings of a mountain range with a water fall and others will be of wildlife. I think that would look really nice and be nice to look at on those rainy days :) And if anyone has done this and has pics. of em i would love to see em!!

That profile you had looks good! Can't wait to see what the new one is! Did you decide on the factory tinted windows/doors?

Well i have'nt done too much this week because i've had the flu and bronchidus but, i have managed to get the new profile template cut and sanded and 1 inner framing done. Also i'll be picking up my aluminum sheeting on friday, red for the sides and white on the top.

And i think i've came up with my TD name also - The eagles nest. Hows that sound for a good name?
I'll get some pics. up later.

This pic shows the Styrofoam cut and in place and also the 1/4" Cherry plywood has been glued to the frame and clamped-weighted down. I'm getting closer !!!!

Here is a close up shot of my door opening it's 26" x 32" and will be 6" above the floor when finished.

Good progress! It looks like you're putting a lot of thought and effort into the details already!

I'm a little jealous of your workshop, but mine is a little more airy!

I'm trying to make it as good as my skills will allow me to. and i wish my shop was about double the size, I don't really have all that much room to really work on large things. :)

I routed the cherry ply to match the profile. The part that isn't covered will get 1/2" blonde wood there and then laminate over that.

Image

This is the offset for the galley lid, I wanted the lid to be stronger so it'll be 2" The center 3/4" ply will be 1/4" over and the outer 1/2" skin will be 1/4" under and the inner lining will be flush with the center piece. This way i can weather strip 1-1/4" and if water does get through it has to also travel upwards also. What do you think about how this will work?

Image

This is a side profile so you can see the whole profile.

Image

Now i do plan on ordering the tinted glass doors for my TD, But if i change my mind which i do aaallll the time i made a template to match the opening ! :) I may have been dropped on my head when i was a kid but i can st-st-still f-f-f-figure thinggggs out. :R

Image

This is one very big bag of sawdust and Styrofoam !!!

[img]http://www.tnttt.com/gallery/image.php?image_id=64168
[/img]

And this is just some of the scraps that i needed to get out of the shop so i can continue to work on my build !! :)

I also started applying poly to one of the cherry interior sides, I'm figuring on about 5 to 6 coats to get a nice gloss finish. :worship:

That's all i have for now,I'll post more tomorrow night now that i'm going full steam ahead !!! I'm shooting for may 20-th to be able to head out to my first gathering !!!

Wish me luck !!

Thats just awesome.

Great shop!

Again, shows there are so many ways to do this thing.
The routed frame would be lovely to work with here, but I am not sure I would want to do all the cutting manually.
Greetings from England.

Rian.

Hoping to get it all done in time.

Thanks Grizz,

There wasn't all that much cutting to it, Cutting out the template and doors i used my trusty dremel multi tool  I love it for cutting out curves and even straight lines fast. And the inside cutouts i just used a skill saw.
