(I would give you a picture ...but I can't draw.)

I think I know what you mean. If we are on the same page, the only problem with that is that the cutout in the vinyl roof would have to fit tight around the fan base, and might be hard to slip over the fan cover when taking it off.

That might be the only hick-up...you would have to just open the vent...but would have a good seal. I agree that you should try your idea first...you are having great success with your other ideas.

Update!!! Two things this evening!!

1. I cut a hole in the vinyl roof. After clarifying my original idea with you guys and getting some replies like "that might work", I decided to go for it. Results to be determined. :worship:

2. Not sure who has seen my thread about Remote Control LED Lighting, but my new (Amercan made) unit came today! IT WORKS!! Dont have a battery for the Scuttlebutt yet, so had to test it using the Subaru's power:

As you see, the remote has 2 buttons: "I" will control the interior LED lights, and "II" will control the exterior lights. The remote is supposed to work from 500 feet away! Can't wait to get everything wired up!!

Zach, if you vinyl plan does not work out, you can always make it 2 piece and bring the piece from the back up to the vent and then another piece from the front to overlap the back one!

The bears are gonna be angry when they gotta open that cellophane wrapper to get to the filling inside
Seriously, nice job. That should be a very pleasant camper to sleep in. Congrats!

Thanks! Got a couple different ones from this site:
http://www.creativelightings.com/default.asp

Have a few of the 3 LED pods for the interior, and a few of the waterproof LED "pucks" for the exterior.

My Mom came to join in on the fun today. She came armed with a sewing machine! I now have curtains with SWEEEEEEET dog print pattern on them! Here she is peeking her head through her masterpiece:

Image

Theres one curtain for each door, then there is going to be a full width curtain that goes across the front on the inside.

Also got the fan and overhead lights wired today! Lights are hooked up to the remote control unit and work like a charm!

Image

I still dont have a battery, but I discovered that my 5A BatteryTender works well as a 12v supply, even when not connected to a battery. Here was my electrical rig for the day. I used 2 blocks of wood and a clamp to keep the wires in place and from touching each other...

I was subscribed to this thread (automagically by posting to it)
but haven't got an update since before the vinyl roof..
in fact no updates at all from the forum...
I thought everybody was building or camping.

Anyway, so I am showing up late to the party. boo hoo
Looking gooood Zach.
I like your choice of white vinyl.
I have a translucent vinyl roof on my yurt,
and I guarantee you will love the ambient light.
Dawn is special, no matter how well hydrated your brain is.

update: surely the reason i didn't see it is because there is no shot
posted of the finished vent on the outside.

My main concern was not water getting in, but tension on the
vinyl.. you're counting on those snaps and the health of the fabric to
keep it taut. It's going to give and stretch a little.
Cutting a hole introduces complexity to the way the weave lays...
Fabric will flog itself to death given the slightest chance.
So, for the sake of my admiration of this build,
whatever you did with the vent in the top,
make sure the fabric is super taut on all sides,
including the edges around the vent, because
once it starts getting whipped at 65mph... wheeeee

Mom did a great job with the curtains as well...nice touch.
The LED are a nice way to go. I am planning LED rope for interior and exterior lighting. (Left over from Christmas)
Looks like you are ready for the first outing...way to go. :applause: :applause:

haha. not about need. the age of cheap electronics...
second nature to kids who grew up playing with intelligent
devices that the would have filled a heavily air-conditioned gymnasium
just a generation ago. and that's minus the graphical interface. lol

Hey Zach: You have a nice RIG there. I like your curtains your mom made up for you. Aren't moms GREAT? I am using LEDs in my TD, also. I am using the ones that go into the regular 12V fixtures. They have 84 LEDs in a radial pattern so they will light up in all directions. All will be LEDs except galley light is florescent. All of my road lights are LEDs as well. It would take me some time to get used to the vinyl top. But, I don't have to sleep in it, you do and that is what matters. Your TD looks very nice.
You used your imagination to come up with a very unique TD. I bet you don't see to many like yours. Now get out there and CAMP !!! ;)

In ref. of the vinyl cover for the fan. If you can find a sealing system like is used on zip-lok bags; problem solved.
