I got married again!!

Some of you might remember that I posted my wife suffered a stroke Jan. 4th. She is recovering pretty well but her right arm is weak and she uses incorrect words frequently. So we laugh a lot and she is able to laugh at her mistakes. She has a great attitude.

Easter Sunday was our 40th Anniversary. I wanted to make it special in some way and decided we would have a recommitment ceremony. She has been worried I would take care of her. My work load has doubled being a caregiver, but I made a promise many years ago.

I had bought a new gray tie for the event. Linda said, "Wear the gray bra with that new shirt." I said I would look funny in a gray bra. She thought for a moment and said, "I meant neck decoration."

You can see in the photos she is crying. She assures me they are happy tears and not the fact she has to spend many more years with me.

Here are the pix. The young family is my son and his family.

Oh how lucky you are to still have your sweet wife with you. Be sure to hug her often and tell her you love her. That is the part I miss about losing my wife of 56 years, a year ago. Some guys seem to forget that part about "in sickness and in health", and in a truely loving relationship, it is just expected, no questions asked.

Good for you, caring for her during her difficult time when she needed you most. I know it can be a full-time job and I commend you for it. Remember, there is a special place in Heaven for care-givers that are willing to do what ever it takes for their loved one.

Greg,

What a beautiful family you have! What a lucky woman your wife is to have such a loving, thoughtful husband! No wonder she had tears in her eyes...I did just looking at your pictures, and I wasn't even there!

It is so good to hear that she is getting stronger and staying positive. She looks great! It is obvious that the two of you treasure your relationship together. Kudos to you both!

Keep up the great work!

Congratulations Greg and Linda, (hope that's right)

You have given your wife a wonderful gift. My husband has had to do a lot for me the last 10 years. Then before Christmas he had a "mini-stroke" that really affected him and now I'm doing my share for him.

We figure we personify the phrase

"The blind leading the blind."

It's wonderful to hear a real willingness to accept "through sickness and health."

God bless you both

Roly, you have certainly earned yourself a spot in that special place in Heaven, right alongside your sweetheart! :)

Your wife is a beautiful woman, isn't she? And the two of you are so lucky to have each other and to appreciate each other so deeply. Thank you for sharing this. I think a recommitment ceremony is great anyway, but under these circumstances, truly a wonderful thing to do. Best wishes to you both.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I do thank you all and Linda will read this and your nice words.

I wanted to mention to Roly and Elizabeth how my life and my attitude changed. Your right Roly that it is automatic to shift gears to a caregiver without a thought. I will be the first to admit that I took her for granted for a long time. She is so well read that I always said she was one of the brightest people I ever knew. I know she is the same inside, just the words won't come out.

I have been selfish with my time with her and paid way too much attention to my work. We are closer now than ever and not because I have to take care of her with bathing and washing hair and the like. It is because trusting and caring is what love is about.

Maybe this will remind us to appreciate all out loved ones more. I know I do.

Only problem is she caught me working on the tear and said, "Don't mess with that thing!" She never called it a "thing" before.

Very sorry to hear of your wife's condition... :( ...but her sense of humor shines through!

For what it's worth, my mother recently suffered a stroke where she too suffered neurological speech center impairment... the miracle today is that we can carry on a telephone conversation without the previously-necessary visual aids. Your wife will improve, slowly but surely!

And, I am getting married in two weeks! to my girl of the last 7 years, Tanya.

Your story is heartwarming and inspiring. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Way to go Greg....I've been a part of many re-commitment ceremonies and they are always a very moving experience....was that a Methodist church that you held the ceremony in?
