Gosh. I must be wrong. I don't remember seing the post where the H/B trailer was being bashed so hard. I do remember seeing it recomended for offroad use. And I remember the responce was that it was not cost efective to try to convert the H/F trailer to offroad use And that it can not be converted to electric brakes without chainging the axle out.
I owned one for several trouble free years. Sold it to my neighbor who is still towing it. It is still a great little trailer. I will admit that I never hauled it more han a fuew miles. Used it as an around the house light utility trailer. But I was never nice to it. It never gave me a lick of trouble.
For a lite T/D towed by a "SANE" rig it should be fine. Seems to me that if I was going to spend the time to build a show pice ( as most of the tears posted here are) WOW, NICE RIGS.......I'd invest a little more time and money, and pride in the trailer (FOUNDATION) thats protecting and carrying the sed Show pice.
But thats just me.... ....Boxcar...
God Bless....

Hopefully to get this thread back on track: I built my 5x9 on the 4x8 1740 lb HF frame. It tows great and shows no signs of wear. I see no reason it won't give many years of TDing fun. I do plan to add the tongue extension that several here have recommended. Mainly, I think backing the trailer would become much easier with the added length.

This is at least the 3rd thread in a very short time on this subject, one of which was locked because it got out of control and personal, and now some of those same passionate comments are creeping into this thread.

Why is it so hard for people to respect the fact that opinions will differ and simply stay on topic?

This forum was at one time different from most other internet forums: respect, dignity and courtesy prevailed - I miss that and hope that someday it returns. http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=6020

Thru the kindness of most teardroppers and a few civilians no one has ever trashed my efforts on my builds. Mine are rough and a bit crude with some unfinished edges but responses have all been positive. We are all different we start out different we are raised different with different career paths but no one get in your face about your life path. So why is a build different? Why do we feel compelled to explain to Mr. X how he screwed up. He simply took a different path. It was his choice. I didn't have 6,000 to 8,000 dollars of disposable income to put into my hobby so I did what I could.

Perhaps it would be best if we simply headed grandma's advise.
" If you can't say anything nice simply say nothing at all "

Let's play nice .................................... Bob

P.S. To stay on topic 2 of my 3 trailers are on HF Frames. :D

Your trailer looks pretty compact and lightweight to me, and look what yer towing it with! No wonder you feel ok. You, IMHO, are OK! My objection is that some tow a HF trailer with a "pregnant roller skate" (or other marginal tow vehicle), loaded beyond the capabilities of their vehicle to stop it as required by some states laws, are courting disaster (and maybe a Darwin award) and justifying their behavior because the HF trailer is cheap and reasonably serviceable. Behaving in a safe and responsible manner is my issue. Not the cost or serviceablilty of a HF trailer.

Cheers,

Gus

Pregnant roller skate!

Yup, yer right, pregnant roller skate, short wheelbase (78 inches), heavy as heck lexan roof (if I remember right), trailer probably over 50 percent of tow vehicle, yer pushin the "envelope".

Murphy was an optomist.

I nearly ate it while towing my utility trailer the other night. Brakes weren't a factor. Cal Trans signs said they were closing down two lanes but were really closing down three. I got over an extra lane and slowed down just to be safe. My view of the lane to my right being closed down was blocked by a boxy truck. The car in front of the truck got confused, stopped and the truck pulled in front of me, cutting me off. I jerked the wheel sharply to the left and got into the empty carpool lane. Couldn't believe I missed the truck, that the trailer didn't fishtail, and the van didn't flip! I was pissed! Called CHP 911 about the FUBAR lane shut down. They had a "cast of thousands" out there the next night to make sure they did a better job.

Anyway I doubt a "pregnant roller skate" with a heavy (realitive to the tow vehicle) trailer and a 78" wheelbase would have been so lucky!

Again, Murphy was an optomist. Although I was seriously considering suicide a few years back and ended up in the insane asylum (twice with 17 ECTs), I've gotton over my thoughts of suicide. Me, I want every reasonable advantage I can get.

Just in case yer wondering the above statement is TRUE. I experienced severe side effects to meds that were prescribed to treat pain. Later doctors that reviewed my medical history described the treatment I recieved as "argueably malpractice". I've learned to live with pain and without meds. However, I did resort to 1 vicodin and 1 valium on a recent transcontinental flight (no escaping the noise and vibration as as a result of DB Cooper, there is now no way to get off an airliner in flight!). The aircraft flew at 35K feet. I "flew" at 45K feet!

Good luck.

Cheers,

Gus

Some days just to tempt Mr. Murphy I will use this setup.

The main reason I am no longer towing with the Scion
is Mama said I was no longer allowed to use her
" Short bus" to pull with.

Oh well the truck has a much bigger "back seat"

However, to stay on topic did I mention Chubby has
about 6,000 miles on a HF Axle and spring asssembly
(with NO bearing broblems) and now sports a
modified HF tongue.

Well after all the excitement recently in several HF threads I just had to get one. They are on sale and I used the 20 % off coupon. Brought the 4X8 1750LB trailer to $287.00. How can you beat that. Now I have to decide what to build. This one will be simpler then the Woody I did first. But that's the fun, figuring out what to make.

UPDATE!! My maiden voyage was this weekend, and we put 600 miles on the Scuttlebutt without any issues! On the way back from Tearstock, I was even on some very rough back roads cruising right along.... shoock up the trailer a little and did even bounce a bit at the one point, but its as sturdy as can be!

So 600 down, heres to the next 60,000 :tipsy:
