8 hours is not slow for charging a VRLA type battery; 13 hours or so is normal for a depleted battery. The simple thing is to get a battery with about the same AH rating. Your battery ampacity should be about 10x your charger's charge rate for optimal battery charging. So if the charger is rated 3A, you should have about a 30AH battery. This is all loosy-goosy and +/-20% is no big deal. What you want to avoid is a big mismatch between charger and battery, like a 10A charger on a 20AH battery.
