painting on fiberglass

Postby deceiver » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:32 pm

I want to paint the name of my trailer on my little guy hatch. I'm an artist so painting the lettering on isn't an issue but I'm used to painting on paper and canvas. The question I have is what will work best on fiberglass? And is there any special treatment or finish coating afterwards that I'll need to do. Basically I'm asking everything that is needed accept how to paint. Things like the type of paint, preparation etc. Any trailer detailers out there?

Thanks in advance

There are three companies I can think of that make striping, or sign paint. OneShot, Finesse, and House of Kolor.

Typically the surface needs to be prepped as any other for paint work, which involves scuffing or sanding, and chemically cleaning. Often a clear coat is applied after to protect, give uv resistance, and restore the shine of the surface that has been scuffed/sanded.

All that being said, you can probably get away with chemically cleaning your trailer, and just painting away to your heart's content. The trailer will not be subjected to the same abuse an ordinary vehicle will get.

Check out the websites for more possible information.

All the stuff I've had lettered or striped in paint, they used 1 shot. Holds up really well, made for signs. Nice thick pigment. Mostly it's vinyl anymore. Doug
