I very much understand you don't have to be directly in the industry.. to know of it. I value the insight that you both offer.. MJ and CD.

I really hate politics... yet have agreed with CD on his various statements.. damned if you do.. damned if you don't.

It made sense to me from the start , that the industry was the better choice to tackle this problem.. and that the government does not have the capability. I also really don't like the way much of the media covers much of anything.. this subject of course included.

I am really not sure what an environmentalist is anymore. I thought I considered myself one... but.

A local issue we had not long ago. There was a small hydro dam, on the stream across the road from me [the dam was about 3 miles downstream] There was a fight to remove it, and actually the government seemed to be one of those wanting it out.

The dam was in great shape. It had been there for about 100 years. It provided enough energy, to power our entire town plus some.

Environmentalist wanted it out, but I think the bigger push came from fishermen. The weird thing.. 4 miles upstream is another dam. :?

It did not make sense to me. Again it was not a huge amount of power.. but what type of power is going to be used to replace it? And what is it's impact on the environment?

As I have said before.. the Arab oil embargo of the 70's had a big impact on me. Using less oil made sense to me.... for many many reasons.

I better insulated my house, and added on a solar greenhouse. I reduced my fuel use for heat by 2/3s. The project paid for itself very quickly.

I then went on to build what we live in now. Some of the change.. was just wanting to build my own from scratch, and to live in a different location. I love the fact that I am not dependent on fossil fuels to keep me warm....
this is also for various reasons.. but the primary one. I am not held hostage to the variables of the market place.

I remember when you couldn't walk on the beaches in Santa Barbara, CA withought getting tar all over you. That's been clened up now. In those days, you could row a boat to the oil rigs in about 10 minutes.

Government isn't evil, but it is ignorant and selfish. Government does not have the expertise to control companies like BP. Government doesn't even have the expertise to know when they are being lied to. They do have the expertise to know where the money comes from, and that has protected a lot of companies up to now.

My biggest fear is, 10 years from now, Katrina will be a minor inconvenience compared to this.

Glenn, I wish you would do a thread sometime on your underground house. I think a lot of people would like to see how you built it, and know the benefits of it -- like living in a bitter cold state and being able to heat you home so easily.

There is also something cool about telling someone you need to mow the roof today.

The thread would need lots of pictures -- that goes without saying, right?

There is still plenty of tar on the beaches of Goleta & Santa Barbara area and still plenty of natural seepage. There is so much natural oil seepage that this area is used by UC Santa Barbara to study how the ocean ecosystem deals with it. The tar may vary by beaches & seasons, but there is still lots of tar. These are my local beaches.

[quote]UCSB students given the task of scooping tar from the sand around Coal Oil Point found that only about 10 percent of the oil that oozes out of the seeps ends up on beaches in the immediate vicinity, Luyendyk says. “Much of it goes somewhere else.â€

Any time a political figure or celebrity says "I don't want to live in a country where...", my shackles go up. I was very disappointed when Alex Baldwin didn't keep his promise to leave the country when George W. Bush was re-elected.

that really is the west side of the house. if you look up through the trees... it is a hill. It is perhaps 25 feet of vertical rise to the top of the house, and going horizontally through the earth .. it is maybe 25 to 30 feet to you hit the house

I still think you need to do a dedicated thread. At the rate you post, you could probably cover the whole history of the house, with lots of photos, in a day or two.

But seriously, I know I would enjoy that thread, and imagine a lot of people here would.
