Door seal details

Postby hikingstaffs » Fri Jul 02, 2010 2:58 pm

I am finalizing my plans and would like help on the door detail.
If the door is constructed with the same detail as the side, the same thickness, how is the door seal applied without making the door stick out or protrude into the interior?
I would appreciate any link that shows design or picture details for the doors. (Basic Benroy)
Thanks,
Barrie

As you can see in the pic, I use a pair of SS marine hinges on my doors, and under the half that mounts to the camper side, I use a custom made correct thickness thick spacer. The purpose is to move the door outwards, to allow for the seal, and the right amount of "crush" on the seal. Most seals, whether on a new car or a camper, have a desired amount of "crush", so that it seals properly, without destroying the seal in the process. If you use a piano hinge or other with out spacing, you completely smash the seal, not always the best sealing method, IMHO. Grants offset piano hinges does the same thing.

I am going with 1.25" walls; 1/4" plywood in and out with 3/4" framed/insulated core. This will allow me to go with a thinner door and flush with the outside and still have room for the right crush spacing. I would like to see the detail of how the door/seal is installed.
Thanks,

I used Steve's sealing method. It involves building a frame inside the door. This creates a lip on this the seal is installed so the door closes against it. It also creates a lip on the bottom which keeps water from running in. I think there are pics in my link below that show how it is done.

ah, yes there is... go to link and click on top left index, 'door frame and seal'... never had any water get in.

Thanks Dan!

You just provided a solution for my ice box. Due to using a replacement seal (different thickness), it closes really tight. I will make an offset shim on the hinge to mate the seal evenly.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but had to give credit for Dan's explanation.
