Goal or objective?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Goal or objective?

Postby Mightydog » Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:00 pm

I've never been able to wrap my head around something. It's the time of year when my clients want me to put together goals with objectives for the upcoming year. It's funny, when I list a goal, someone will say that it's really more of an objective. When I list objectives toward a goal, I'm told it's all wrong.

I've been at this for more than 25 years and still don't get it, it appears.

What is an objective?

What is a goal?

Is this one of those mean tricks that sales people pull on the rest of the world because they're frustrated?

Goals are broad... objectives are narrow.

Goals are general intentions... objectives are precise.

Goals are intangible... objectives are tangible.

Goals are abstract... objectives are concrete.

Goals can't be validated, as is... objectives can be validated.

 I believe both can be easily validated

I'd have to agree with you Mightydog, Goals are the end result of objectives
My goal is to get the galley done before our next gathering. Very measurable as done.
I have a goal to finish the tear by winter Objective to finish the Galley by the gathering then the inside after that.

Hmmm...

1st objective is to build a chassis ~ goal is to build a teardrop

2nd objective is to build walls ~ goal is to build a teardrop

3rd objective is to put a roof on ~ goal is to build a teardrop

4th objective is build a hatch ~ goal is to build a teardrop

All the objectives have been met... I must have a teardrop, eh? :applause:

Having been in education forever Michael has it right.. for what it's worth. It's not an easy one to get your head around. Teachers need to do it early and get them straight.

My wife teaches second grade. She uses programs that give goals and objectives so she can write that in to her lesson plans. She's smarter than me and it's an elusive concept for her.

My sister a web developer received "exceeding excellence" on her review and she got a $5000 trip to Mexico for her entire family. I got "Exceeding Excellence" in every category in my review and I was told that my review had no relationship to my raise whatsoever and my bonus was being reduced. This coming from BofA who is not hurting. I have a feeling the VPs are graded on a different scale.

We have a new president, and he is crazy with time management. So now, when I repair a machine, lets say I had to repair a broken wire, and it took 5 min. Well, I have to fill out a work order, a time log, a time sheet and a down time report, all of which takes longer than the actual repair did. On top of that, I can't log 5 min down time on a machine, so I have to report having the machine down for repair for 30 min. It is so rediculous. If I have a job that takes 8 hours, and I get it done in 6, I have so many papers to fill out for the extra work I got done that day, I usualy just say "F" it and take a couple hour long breaks. Fortunately, I work on 2nd shift, and have my own computer, so I just surf the forums, and pull up a spread sheet is somebody walks by.

Here's the way I define it (I know there are different definitions though.)

Think of it like this. A goal is a target. It is ultimately what you want to achieve. Objectives are what you hope to gain by achieving that goal.

Example. Goal:build a teardrop
objective1: sharpen my carpentry skills
objective2: meet some fellow lovers of nature
objective3: have an outlet for my creative side.
objective4: have a reason to go into Lowes and Home Depot

So, my goal is to make a living. My objective would be to photograph and design things for paying customers.

I'm glad I got that out of the way for another year.
