I built my unit and pretty much set it up for just my wife and me. Thinking about having 3 children sharing the interior space wouldn't work very well in our 5' wide.
Before you make the big leap, take some time and check out a lot of builds on this site and manufactured units, keeping in mind how your family will be camping. I know that some people have built units with upper bunks for small children, but I don't Know how well they work over time as the kids grow up.
Whichever way you decide to go, enjoy the family time camping will provide.
Welcome again, Buff
Hey Buff,
We've been tent camping for lots of years and the "kids" are pretty much grown. I saw a teardrop maybe ten years ago and it made an impression since it was a really nice rig. Finding this site took a little mystery out of the "build" part and I am just investigating for now. I don't really have a place to build and this is not the season to begin an outdoor project. The owner built units look really nice but there is convenience in a ready made. I haven't decided one way or the other. I am just gathering information. There is lots to see here and I am not even sure which design appeals to me.
I would like to know how many tears are built by first-time-never-built-anything-before guys. Is there a step by step guide of any sort or just blueprints here you go plans. Finances always seem to be a factor and I would kind of like to know what to expect. Maybe that's like asking how much does a car cost.
Bottom line is that this site has piqued my interest in teardrops. Not only are the trailers themselves appealing but the cammaraderie among the participants is another draw. I like to camp, eat well and laugh. Which seem to be common themes.
Thanks for the welcome I look forward to spending time here.
