I am a new TD owner and basically a trailer noob.
I recently purchased a Silver Shadow 5x8 and we pull it with my wifes Rav4 4 cylinder.
I mounted a tongue box on the front and also mounted the spare tire on the tongue. I just weighed the tongue and was kind of surprised to see that it weighed in the neighborhood of 240 lbs. The spare tire and mount is 50 lbs, the box and tools about 35 maybe.
The Rav4 is rated to pull 1500 lbs but only 150 lb tongue weight. I estimate that my trailer weighs about 1200 lbs loaded so not worried about the total weight. However, the tongue weight is obviously higher than the rav is rated for.
We towed this back 350 miles from St. George with the spare tire and all of the gear in the box right in the back of the Rav (and a huge cooler) so it basically had almost the same weight on the rear axle. It towed beautifully and we hauled it up and down some pretty steep grades (east enterence of Zion Park for example).
I know there is another Silver Shadow owner on here with a 200 lb tongue that is towing behind a Subaru. My question is this. I really can't see anywhere else to mount the tire and I would really rather not haul it in and out of the car all the time. If I added some heavier duty load adjusting shocks (like sensa-tracs) on the rear of the Rav would that help compensate for the 240 lb tongue weight?
The Rav is equipped with a 3500/350 rated hitch with a 6500 lb rated 2" receiver.
Thanks in advance.
Joe
