Hi fron Nevada

Hello
Sam and Kat here. We’re from Carson City, Nevada. We are long time campers. The three kids are gone, so it’s down to the two of us. Started out with a 1969 16’ Ideal with flipped axles. Drug that thing all over and had a blast in it. Even floated it once crossing a stream… Finally, it just wore out. We then got a 18’ toyhauler. That led to getting quads which led to a 30’ toyhauler. Still have it, with no plans to get rid of it (great base camp for hunting), but we really miss the ability to get into the more remote locations. Also we’re planning a cross country trip next August and I don’t want to do all the driving (GVWR on the toyhauler requires a special endorsement on the license). Kat isn’t going to get the endorsement so I’m the only driver while towing the toyhauler.

Anyways, after that drawn out intro, we are thinking about building a teardrop. It looks like it would be great for quick getaways along the creeks, and would be real nice to have on the cross country trip next year.

I’m a hobbyist woodworker and a fair welder, so have the tools to build one. Time will be an issue since I need to finish a sand rail restoration I’m in the middle of before I start on the teardrop.

We’re thinking of a 5’ wide 10’ long tear, sandwich wall construction with a painted exterior. Probably will build the frame from scratch. We like the looks of the tires/ fenders outboard of the box, and I want a fairly heavy duty trailer for desert travel.

Once we have a firmed up sketch, I’ll post what we are thinking of. Of course, there are a couple of things we want to do that are different. One of the joys of building your own.

Sam and Kat

Sam/Kat

welcome to the madness and in your case the sand box

read through the designs above in the heading and I'm sure you've started going through the build section, there have been some great ideas being passed around and another one to check out would be

Larry put a lot of thought into the design of this teardrop for use in exploring the southern Mojave desert.

Welcome from Reno Sam and Kat! You've found the best place for expert help from wonderfully kind souls. There are a growing number of Nevadans building Teardrops and a new Tearjerkers too.

All the Best, Dave

Welcome from the Lake. I'm in the planning phase myself, since I've got to knock out the honey do list before I can start building. I know you'll find a ton of ideas and answers to your questions. I have!!! 8)
