Door Hinge Question

What kind of door hinge should I use for a door that will be 1&1/2" thick? My door and walls will be a sandwich construction. 1/2" ply, 3/4" insulation, and 1/4" interior skin.

My doors are 1 1/4" thick and are similar contruction to your doors. I purchased my hinges from McMaster-Carr. They are part #1264A12.



Two per side are sufficient for each door. I went with three per side because I thought it looked better.

I used torpedo hinges for mine. I like that I can lift off the door if I ever need to.

If you like the Strap Style hinges, we use them on our Explorer Boxes and offer them for 1/2 the price of McMaster

I used the same hinges that Schaney used. They are strong and cost me about $5.00 each in 2006.

With the strap style hinge whats the best way to fasten it. With a bolt and nut, t-nut or wood screw???

LDK, for a heavier door like on a teardrop I'd go with bolts & nuts or bolts into t-nuts. On lighter doors like an Explorer Box front or side compartment, wood screws work fine, but if it will see off-pavement towing I like to go with bolts & nuts.

So you open the door... get a good hold.... and can lift it off?
That seems like a really handy thing when loading.

I use the bullet hinge as well but decided only two per door. Great hinge and yes it will allow the door to swing all the way open. Ask me how I know as I had a door knob imprinted on the side wall. I was just thankful the window wasn't open. The removable feature was great during construction because the door could be constantly removed for fitting and finishing without having to remove and replace screws constantly. Some people I knew voiced concerns about not having hidden screws and how that may encourage thieves. If that is a concern just mix some epoxy and place in the screw heads.

Yep, it will go all the way flush to the side. Like zapj said you have to be careful or your open window or handle will hit the side.

They do sound great (opening allowing more space to move at your site; and removing during construction).

I purchased mine from Moore Industrial Hardware on the internet. Type in the search box at their site, Torpedo hinge and your choices will show. Be sure and purchase both left hand and right hand hinges. I paid approx $79 back in '09 for my four. The site lists 'call' for a quote.
